mircea_popescu: no that's amd's mid 2010s chips
mircea_popescu: "maybe busted invisibly ?" when LO!! it's one of those idiotic amd boards that do not do diag, and if hardware config changed it locks. gotta short the RCTL pins to get it to look in its belly!
asciilifeform: similar story to the amd keys thing.
brazilish: nice to see that with AMD there is something more recent than 2009 btw
BingoBoingo: You can also go more recent if you stick with AMD
swiftgeek: asciilifeform: remember that recent AMD chipset from amdflaws?
asciilifeform: just like we found with the amd fritz
BingoBoingo: https://www.cnx-software.com/2016/06/26/599-softiron-overdrive-1000-server-is-powered-by-amd-opteron-a1100-64-bit-arm-processor/ && https://archive.is/CVwS3 << Not sure if actually sold anywhere or vaporware
asciilifeform: which are ~100% documented in amd's datashits

BingoBoingo: <mircea_popescu> 2u is like... 8.9cm tall. you think not ? << Alright with the amd fx-8350 there are skus that some with different coolers. There the stock cooler that looks like it should not be a problem, and then there is the WRAITH special edition kooler 4Gamerz which is 80 mm high and rather tall for a 2U case. Whoever goes piling iron would be advised to watch this difference.

diana_coman: http://btcbase.org/log/2018-02-06#1781846 <- my only slight dislike of the amd fx is precisely higher power consumption & warming up; while fx 8350s is indeed not that bad on this account, it still consumes more than opteron 6376 afaik ☝︎

asciilifeform: ( in case anybody forgot, this is the box where you can stuff a few MB of useful payload straight into bios. which in turn is the last blobless amd build, takes payload straight in makefile )
asciilifeform: won't buy post-2011 amd either.
asciilifeform: btw laplinker , recent ( 2013? 14? and after..? ) amd opterons suffer from similar problem : http://btcbase.org/log/2016-10-04#1552690 ☝︎
laplinker: than for intel platforms, i recommend minnow, but you are already set with AMD so nm
asciilifeform: laplinker: i don't particularly need this for anything, when i have a working sageprobe and amd boxes
laplinker: oh, its a long story about AMD, HDT, and looking for sage probes online :)
asciilifeform: http://btcbase.org/log/2018-01-23#1774633 << '9000' places to learn. e.g. the amd manual. or just about any www page on subj. or there's now even an apress b00k, iirc 'low-level programming', that's ~ok . or , or ☝︎
BingoBoingo: <asciilifeform> a circa 2008 box, for >8x what i paid for a dulap-class opteron cum ssd raid << Has two of last year's http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Zen/AMD-EPYC%207251.html and 128 GB of RAM, I am asking for a list but if you could forward some spec'd by alf suggestions it could be helpful.
trinque: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=AMD-PSP-Disable-Option << totally unrelated, pay no attention

asciilifeform: in other lulz, http://seclists.org/fulldisclosure/2018/Jan/12 >> ahahahahahaha the amd fritz chip, apparently finally killed
asciilifeform: ( does 0 on pre-obummer amd, i will add )

BingoBoingo: http://btcbase.org/log/2018-01-02#1762316 << Perhaps in March after more crashing, S.NSA can fab a MIPs board not too uncompetitive with the "patched" AMD/Intelium ☝︎
asciilifeform: recent AMD CPU.'
asciilifeform: amd g-series, btw
asciilifeform: btw asciilifeform will reveal that he found a 'new' (to him) and very spiffy type of amd g-series box , suitable for trb and similar
mircea_popescu: and i'll insist and underline that no, can not be the case these are people. if i can emulate 10k of them on a stock amd, they're not people, they're 1/10k of a stock amd.
BingoBoingo: <mircea_popescu> ah sorry my bad, week/month nm << Number is strictly what the spot on the rack costs. Prototype "Basic Box" (AMD A8 5545 machine) should be arriving today for evaluation.
asciilifeform: for only slightly higher cost you get those amd g-series boxen ( e.g. 'pcengines' )
BingoBoingo considering quad core AMD A8-5545 blade server offering, listing as "Modest Blade"
BingoBoingo: Prolly not going that small. Qntra may get own box E350 or similar AMD
asciilifeform: don't buy intel. or amd made in 2011 and after.
BingoBoingo: http://btcbase.org/log/2017-10-19#1727102 << I am still looking for both higher density pcengines apartments as well as beefier AMD boards ☝︎
BingoBoingo: asciilifeform: Anyways consider the case of 100 AMD G boards colo'd in a 4U case. How much speed for them?
asciilifeform: the low-wattage amd champ, incidentally, is the g-series ( as in 'pcengines', 'gizmo', and other sageprobetronic boards ) -- whole box pulls 10-20w
mircea_popescu: ftr, amd actually does the ecc in the chip itself.
mircea_popescu: (amd produced different same chips, for dcs and for desktops. significant power diff)
mircea_popescu: and also, any amd fx 9500 for eg, in U config ?
asciilifeform: trinque: theoretically they still have the port, it just dun work without amd magic key
mircea_popescu: in any case the amd cpu i bought was underpriced both at list price and at 2nd hand price. cuz i sure as fuck ain'\t making one in my laundry room out of lint and wall shavings for less than a few hundred.
mircea_popescu: so then 1, for phuctor, 1tb item ; 1 for special purpose amd, as much as it can carry, and 2 run of the mill, what's to be found at a decent price.
asciilifeform: can even have old amd, but with the expected horsepower hit ( and afaik none were made that ate >256G )
asciilifeform: ( and post-'09 amd . )
asciilifeform: there's NO reason to emulate, e.g., amd am2900, for all time.
asciilifeform: ideally would end with the 'good parts' -- the genera envir -- without the rubbish ( the byzantine hacks around specific amd alu chip quirks, the multitude of special purpose busses, the constricted addrspace )
phf: i wasn't a rich imperialist at the time, but freebsd was quite pleasant on a 300mhz amd, i used it as main os for a long time, until, yeah, 2002 or so. this is also when i switched to mac os x, which was perhaps a mistake. i suspect these people made their own deals with devil
asciilifeform: ( recall, current amd is locked into pantsuitbios )
mircea_popescu: but basically FT amd's will fit into your purpose here.
mircea_popescu: remember when amd would never have dared stopping contributing to coreboot because "public opinion" ?
mircea_popescu: so no, amd hasn't released.
mircea_popescu: by our, not amd's decision.
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform if amd fritz chip uses bad crypto and we derive the key, has amd thereby "Released to the public" ? no such thing happened.
asciilifeform: link was re amd's magic key cpu-integrated fritz chip, and how reddit et al 'protested', and reply was - unsurprisingly - 'fuck off'
asciilifeform: in other unsurprises, https://yro.slashdot.org/story/17/07/19/1459244/amd-has-no-plans-to-release-psp-code
asciilifeform: about the same time as when amd stopped contributing to 'coreboot'
asciilifeform: the demise of sage co. is imho an interesting thing. afaik amd very specifically killed it -- locked the debug port, as explained in http://btcbase.org/log/2016-10-04#1552690 ☝︎

asciilifeform: no matter how crippled ( see amd thread from september )
asciilifeform: ( 'fg plugged into usb hub powered from wall 5v plug, amd crapteron 7.7ghz running shithead linux' etc
asciilifeform: in other quasi-noose, http://shop.voipdistri.com/Embedded-board-und-Mini-PC-System-bundle/Embedded-Boards-633/Deciso-Netboard-A10-Embedded-Motherboard---BIG-performer--low-power--AMD-next-generation-G-Serie-SOC-Chipset.html << possible 3rd board that worx with sage.
asciilifeform: ^ reads ~100% exactly like asciilifeform's correspondence with intel and amd.
asciilifeform: but separate issue is that amd discontinued the sage-able G-series cpu.
asciilifeform: i even put the amd pubkeys in phuctor, recall.
asciilifeform: amd g-series has been properly crippled, as of 2y ago.
a111: Logged on 2017-05-08 13:04 asciilifeform: gizmolearner: theoretically you can attach probe to any (but the latest, crippled) amd cpu using a 'socket interposer' that sandwiches under the chip. but as to where to get it -- no one seems to know.

asciilifeform: 2 has bloblocked amd and -- as if this weren't enough -- intel (yes) nic.
Framedragger: amd dropped coreboot support in (iirc) 2013 *because* it deemed it not profitable. impact to business probably ~0.
Framedragger: amd "kinda said" they may release full src for coreboot et al., but obvs no dice yet
asciilifeform: and on amd also very similar

trinque: I put one of those new AMD chip boxes together today; no moar thinputers.
CompanionCube wonders what the best key(s) to get phuctored would be. USG/NSA''s? Intel/AMD's signing keys?
BingoBoingo: <asciilifeform> where exactly does it work reliably. << AMD E350 board works splendidly
asciilifeform: i thought about getting one with amd g-series -- and was at the point of seriously attempting it when the latter began to show signs of death
