ThickAsThieves: thats why 80s-00s ruined shit, they made music a business model, all they needed was a husk amd some writers
decimation has an HP amd-based 'microserver' with ecc ram
asciilifeform: e.g. an 'amd opteron' wouldn't cost any less than what we pay for it here, wherever else on the planet you might go
mircea_popescu: the net result would have been foss+amd buldgeoning them into a fine paste.
asciilifeform even now running amd hardware ('tyan' circa 2007) largely because amd mobos with ecc support and multiple pcie-16 slots have vanished into some mysterious black hole. ☟︎
asciilifeform: everyone's on amd << thought it was just me.
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform: (intel never once in its entire life published anything but a mockery of 'open source.' see their 'open' bios, for example.) << sadly. which is why everyone's on amd, really.
asciilifeform: intel is arm of usg. amd - produces clones at the crown's pleasure (see agreement with intel)
asciilifeform: very telling detail - neither intel nor amd publish microcode documentation. (intel's microcode loader is known only from the leaked ami src, afaik. amd's is public. intel crypts their patches, amd - no. both release opaque binary blobs for microcode, no docs.)
asciilifeform blows dust of volumes of intel & amd cpu manual
asciilifeform: decimation: for some years, there were fpga on the market that fit into an intel or amd cpu socket

BingoBoingo: I remember when AMD fucked their compilers by cribbing Intel
ThickAsThieves: I wonder when AMD will just start making best-in-class ASICs
ThickAsThieves: "Weak Bitcoin-related demand is said to be taking a toll, and AMD and Nvidia (NVDA) have reportedly been pressured to cut GPU prices to boost demand. But both firms are instead opting to focus on cutting GPU shipments."

BingoBoingo: The fucking AMD GPU works, but not the onboard realtek RTL8188CE
fluffypony: pankkake: on scrypt GTX 750 ti does half the hash rate of an AMD R280 at half the cost, but it uses 40W of power instead of ~300W
pankkake: I fail to see the centralization of ASICs. GPUs = AMD. that's it. CPU = 99% Intel.
asciilifeform: or rather, 'amd socket f'
asciilifeform: the 1kg and similar nice thermal hedgehogs unfortunately won't work here (i run dual-socket boards, 'amd type f', there is just enough room for ordinary one)
pankkake: amd?
Naphex: Asus AMD Radeon R9 295X2, 8192MB + Asus X79 RAMPAGE IV BLACK EDITION was the expensive part
moiety: amd strawberries!

mircea_popescu: punkman i said AMD!
ThickAsThieves: AMD is most likely imo
punkman: why not AMD?
mircea_popescu: amd, nvidia, intel, they can all do it.
Duffer1: i could see nvidia sha vs amd scrypt
BingoBoingo: punkman: A number of the AMD Thinkpads don't or at least shouldn't have that (May lack that and possess something else). I think the X140e is the newest of that bunch.
BingoBoingo: twizt: Honestly I picked my X120e for the amd fusion chip, and I've fallen in love with it for the keyboard
Duffer1: makes me wish i had amd stock hehe
Vexual: i dont think amd will ver have a week like last week, for the week

Rulother-home: Only with an amd cpu
DeCiB3l: AMD is better value for your money
Chaang-Noi: AMD FX-8350 Eight-Core is this a decent chip?
Chaaang-Noi: well, im off to smoke a joint, get a bj amd them pass out. i have to flay like 14 hours tomorrow and that will suck...
Namworld: AMD just happens to be somewhat good at hashing, but it's not something people would normally look for in their GPU cluster.
cads: not sure why AMD has been an underdog for so long - the situation's been similar between them and intel, with intel being more popular despite AMD offering, in my opinion, a better product
Namworld: No, it's just that Nvidia is slightly better for traditional GPU usage. AMD is more of consumer grade GPUs for playing games. The way they're made, they're also good for some other calculations like hashing.
Namworld: Bitcoiners have searched for AMD clusters.
cads: Namworld: after a simple search I don't find any companies that offer AMD GPU clusters, which stinks.
Namworld: They don't rent a Nvidia at 1/10th of the cost it would be to run the AMD equivalent at home =P
Namworld: If they offered the AMD equivalent for the same price they do their Nvidia cluster, might be worth it to rent.
Namworld: Clouds don't offer AMD
Namworld: So it sucks for all stuff no graphical which AMD does way better.

mjr___: amd?
mod6: why not? what if AMD comes out with ASICs in '14?
smickles: jborkl: no, the rest is AMD, it's how they are still in business
bgupta: bear in mind all of these companies are rank amateurs muddling their ways through this.. companies like amd/intel/ti they would have shipped.
mircea_popescu: and then i could find a foxy chick to train for this mission of infiltrating amd top brass

jurov: AMD has year or so turnaround
ThickAsThieves: why the hell doesnt AMD do it
BingoBoingo: The old 0.7.2+ would probably load fastest on an i7 because BDB doesn't parallelize well, 0.8.X and later on an AMD chip I imagine; an SSD makes a bigger bifference than any processor though
Diablo-D3: AMD has superior single threaded integer performance
Chaang-Noi: what is better on linux a i3 2130 or an amd 955?
ThickAsThieves: Intel is so much better than AMD
midnightmagic: Also AMD calls the machines NUMA.
Diablo-D3: if amd ever fixed that, you might end up with a non-numa supercomputer.
midnightmagic: Except that I have a machine that AMD calls NUMA that I'm logged into right now.
Diablo-D3: like, half the top 500 are AMD NUMAs
Diablo-D3: AMD manufactures very large numa machines
