mircea_popescu: asciilifeform hey, got a link to the original discussion re merits of
urbit right before you sold your whatever it was, battlestarisland
phf: "Our records show that you are the owner of 2
Urbit planets."

Urbit Is Building a 'Virtual Galaxy' for Bitcoin Nodes (coindesk.com)"

Urbit stars for $256 - or, TODAY ONLY, only $205."

 ☟︎ trinque: this is why
urbit did those glyphs or whatever they called them
 jurov: why not just use
urbit, gotta stand on shoulder of giants :D

Urbit and a blockchain network is that blockchains are "trust superconductors" - they eliminate any dependency on social, political or economic trust.
Urbit is a "trust conductor" - engineered to minimize, but not eliminate, dependencies on trust.'
phf: it's interesting to see how fast
urbit "turned" both politically and on technical questions. markdown jet? choosing markdown is a copout in itself (there's a naggum rant where he says that plaintext markup languages are designed by people who don't understand NLP), but why would you outsource something so traditional as a text blob parser? seems like an opportunity to showcase your language's text manipulation facilities, etc.

Urbit has a markdown parser jet.'
 ascii_field: 'With this mechanism,
Urbit can update a distributed system (such as our own :talk network), upgrading both applications and protocols, silently without user intervention or notification. ' << itching to try this yet ?
 mircea_popescu: technologically
urbit, managerially dogecoin, practically ripple.
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform seriously, it seems like this thing aims to be ~
urbit. made by people of the same exact ilk ("got some usg payola") but who understand EVEN LESS of computing.
decimation: yeah I've read it. I even attempted to learn
urbit, before much good documentation was abvailable
 ben_vulpes: there's also the
urbit style naming convention for keys
 trinque: is this
urbit thing ever going to give sane names to its abstractions?
ben_vulpes: did this syllable set (or some derivative) end up in
urbit?
 gabriel_laddel:
Urbit is probably a good example for what I think stas is discussing. You can get paid very well so long as you are very active doing nothing.
mircea_popescu: for the other it's not ok to admit
urbit exists strictly because a) yarvin's chumpatron attempt failed just at the time b) usg was looking for a particular tool
mircea_popescu: "Writing an empty stub is an extremely bad practice and should only be done in desperation, because at the
urbit level it produces a system event log that is nonrepeatable, or at least noncompliant with the nock spec. Discrepancies propagate rapidly in any kind of replay. You should be able to turn off all jets and get the same result. This is not practical, but it is practical if you disable everything but a few ba
 decimation tried to run
urbit after it was publicized, got tired of the entire world collapsing every other day
decimation: asciilifeform: moldbug hasn't make something 'useful' of
urbit yet?
decimation: I think mr. yarvin pointed to some internet elder figure who was hawking this idea (also
urbit)
BingoBoingo was probably the least technical person to compel
Urbit to the gallows
decimation: I'm sure when they are done with 'stealth mode'
urbit will be awesome ;)
 mircea_popescu: "
Urbit is unlaunched. Not that we ever launched it. It leaked. A leak is not a launch; a construction site is not a house." such typical overconfident yet irresponsible derp bs.
mircea_popescu: <asciilifeform> mircea_popescu: he wouldn't have been out there trying to make a bitcoin-... << claims that he tried (and gave up, because 'can have problems') << lies. what is the
urbit thing ?
BingoBoingo: I've never really liked his argumentative style as he tries to put forth the grand societal argment relying on mush that seem reminiscent of
Urbit "jets"
 benkay: at least
urbit had code in the wild, has ether achieved that yet?
benkay: <mircea_popescu> benkay well so far it's really an
urbit fork. // vaporware fork XD
 BingoBoingo: asciilifeform: It's my
Urbit one. Apparently the Google/NSA complex really dislikes Nock too....
 BingoBoingo: Imagined
