decimation: " According to a press release from the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), until 2008, the CBP would snap pictures of the trademarks and other info on suspected counterfeit chips and send the images to semiconductor firms for verification. That stopped with when the Department of Homeland Security implemented a new security policy."

mircea_popescu: semiconductor is fundamental perhaps.
asciilifeform: semiconductor?
mircea_popescu: kinda hard to make semiconductors lead free.
diametric: also I'm assuming you own a semiconductor fab too.
monolithik: network consolidation is definitely a problem. Best case scenario IMO: ASIC development hits the point where an increase in ghash/watt would be reducible to a general improvement in human knowledge of semiconductors. At that point bitcoin ASICs will become commoditized like Intel CPUs, and the distribution of hashpower would settle to some equilibrium where power was not too widely concentrated
benkay: that'd be one of the reasons i bailed on the semiconductor space
mike_c: i don't see how that prevents the semiconductor plants from being boss. they can still crank out the most work, regardless of what that work is.

asciilifeform: "...a paper, JVST A Volume 20, Issue 4, pp. 1365-1368 describing transistors made with anodized aluminum gate insulator and a chemical bath deposited semiconductor (CdS/CdSe). Both are techniques that do not require complicated equipment (beaker, current source, heater) and should have been accessible in the 1920s."

asciilifeform: mostly useless for semiconductor work, though
ThickAsThieves: Micon trusts this video
Diablo-D3: mircea_popescu: but isnt cryptomicon older than that?
asciilifeform: jborkl: true, just as there is no semiconductor plant owner with the good sense to drop some of his pocket change on building a million ASIC miners and running them in his own mansion.
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform there's more people owning slaves than semiconductor fabs. this is a fact.
asciilifeform: all of the Bitcoin-like altchains are doomed, because the first serious guy with a semiconductor fab will own the world. SlaveCoin is the future!
