asciilifeform: ( 3620 was approx on part with winblowz for boot time )
asciilifeform: asciilifeform's purchase of 3620 back in the day may've been a dead end, but at least only wasted a handful of posts on subj.
asciilifeform: ( somewhere on my hdd, there's a photo of shrobe walking across a stage holding up a 3620 , the kind in http://www.loper-os.org/?p=51 , in his hands, 'looksy, first 'portable' bolix' )
asciilifeform: ^ 26, to be exact, 'ivories' ( the rest weitek and 3620 rubbish )
asciilifeform: unlike, e.g., 3620, where i remember no fewer than 9 massive pga things
asciilifeform: amberglint: iirc he found pinouts. not crown jewels, tho could be of use in ~very slowly~ getting sumthing useful from the 2 'ivory' crystals i traded a 3620 for
asciilifeform: tho i wonder how he measured the bolix 3620; back when i had mine, it most certainly did not 'feel like' winblowz-levels of i/o lag
asciilifeform: ^ though i'ma nitpick, i actually ~had~ ( nao sold, ty phf ! for finding buyer ) a symbolics 3620 ; and it beat the shit out of the 2000s crapples, winblowz boxen, etc, at least subjectively. ( i did not obtain a 1000fps camera, unlike in the experiment claimed by linked item )
asciilifeform: ( e.g. my 3620 was circa '86 )
asciilifeform: also met a phriend of his, who asked not to be named, who traded 2 bolix 'ivory' cpus for asciilifeform's 1 bolix-3620 .
asciilifeform: speaking of old harleys, looks like d00d from #bolix will trade 2 ivory cpu for 1 3620
asciilifeform: re energy -- my 3620 drew ~600 W.
asciilifeform: as for weight, original bolix was doublefridge size. the 3620 (what i have here) was paraded when debuted by the ceo hand carried on a stage in front of audience, 'only 100 pounds!'
asciilifeform: lol i might have found a buyer for ye olde 3620
asciilifeform: asciilifeform would trade a 3620 and 2 alphas for 1 working ivory
asciilifeform: ( asciilifeform also has a ~working~ 3620 but it is useless for phf's purpose , it was implemented as massive pile of ttl and a few ~dozen~ gate arrays )
asciilifeform: Framedragger: some of these people wrote to me re the 3620
asciilifeform: (my 3620 certainly does )
asciilifeform: having the physical 3620, was, interestingly enough, ~useless.
asciilifeform: and if we can get performance on par with, e.g., my 4mhz bolix 3620 - it's a win. of sorts.
asciilifeform: the five grand does not buy 'same as your pc', it buys something quite rather more like what is in my bolix 3620.
asciilifeform: mircea_popescu: my 1986 symbolics 3620 was made out of this.
asciilifeform: i'd like to connect that tape deck to my 3620, for instance.
asciilifeform: i had 3620 because poorfag
mircea_popescu: if you DID have it, you wouldn't sell the 3620. because great.
asciilifeform: recall my attempt at selling ordinary 3620?
phf: i know some folk who can restore 3620 drives, but's that's because that's what they do. i'll ask them what their solutions are at the moment
asciilifeform: phf: lulzily, symbolics sold a 3620 (the machine i have) but in 'deployment' variant, it was physically identical but had legalese forbidding development

phf: asciilifeform: well twenex was selling a handful of ivory's for ~5000k, so a 3620 with it's power requirements and refrigerator size will be some fraction of that
asciilifeform: cazalla: i have the 3620 (first photo)

asciilifeform: it is in the symbolics 3620 lisp machine, and works still.

asciilifeform: running like clockwork, 12 years later << so wat. i've a symbolics 3620 'running like clockwork' 28 years later.
asciilifeform: the ancient hdd in these (such as my 3620) is always the most fragile part, being mechanical and very old (1986 in my case)

asciilifeform: kakobrekla: what would you like to know about the 3620?
kakobrekla: you have a pic of 3620 insides ? i dont see much on google
asciilifeform: kakobrekla: the 3620 is actually very atypical for the tech of those days. not a 'microcomputer' in any real sense. for instance, there's a motorola '68k' in there - just to direct the boot process and for nothing else!
asciilifeform: kakobrekla: when the 3620 came out, howard cannon (symbolics co.), a strong fellow, famously danced with it on a stage, claiming 'first man-portable lisp machine!'
asciilifeform: kakobrekla: the older one (that is, the actual symbolics 3620, not the dec alpha box running emu)

asciilifeform: (for those innocent: http://www.computinghistory.org.uk/det/22982/Symbolics-3620 )
asciilifeform: mircea_popescu: you'd really love my Symbolics 3620 then.
asciilifeform: my symbolics 3620 has 4mb.
