mircea_popescu: I was reading The Lean Startup at that time, which is a great book, but not completely fool proof (here is a fool who got it wrong). I started well: in December I created a very basic idea and rough screens of my team management web tool. In January I built a very basic 2 page website with a video explaining what Teamometer.com did and a “try it free” button, which then lead to a page for inputting the email addres
mircea_popescu: yup. great book too. it might be the best kids book ever written

mircea_popescu: total waste of trees, but if you want to get the veblen good, get the actual fucking veblen good rather than some plastic mass market replacement. nobody of the old jews you're trying to impress is going to give a shit about your book ; they WILL however notice that your thing comes off a web press not a pod outfit, and that'll scare the everliving shit out of them.

mircea_popescu: I wrote a new book, and it’s out now. But–it’s not funny stories of getting drunk, hooking up and yelling curses at people (though it’s sort of related, a little). It’s different than that. It’s called “Mate: Become the Man Women Want,” and it’s the definitive guide that will help guys understand women and dating"

nubbins`: http://log.bitcoin-assets.com/?date=08-12-2015#1338948 << incidentally, we publish a psychedelic-dipped book of common local birds; my favourite illustration is the Black Guillemot, who is quite obviously being as loud as he fucking can, simply because he's a bird and it feels good to do so ☝︎
mircea_popescu: actually The Story of Nubbins the Industrious would make a pretty decent book title.
nubbins`: and published an art book
mircea_popescu: hm was that book handmade by laser ?
nubbins`: anyway, to bind a 300-page book via this method would produce a wonderful lay-flat tome, and only take smth like 13 hours
mircea_popescu: After staring at this commitment string for a little while, we suspected (or, if you prefer, we had a divine inspiration) that the first 10 digits might represent the ISBN number of a published book.

punkman: imagines an argument with God over human nature. The book ends with the narrator's being approached by hospital employees who reveal themselves to be Project members. They tell him their plans still continue, and that they are expecting Tyler to come back."
punkman: book ending: "With Tyler gone, the narrator waits for the bomb to explode and kill him. The bomb malfunctions because Tyler mixed paraffin into the explosives. Still alive and holding Tyler's gun, the narrator makes the first decision that is truly his own: he puts the gun in his mouth and shoots himself. mircea_popescu: in the book. in the film, nicholson OWNS the place.
punkman: thestringpuller: adlai: didn't that happen with fight club as well? << I thought epilogue of the book was better than movie ending
mircea_popescu: other than this mediated sort of approach, straight book-film comparisons are pretty meaningless anyway.
mircea_popescu: the film does a better job of this as a film than the book does a job of it as a book. arguably this is because film has less space to do it in ; countrariwise, film is more of a "tower of babel" sort of artifice, so it's harder to get anything done.
adlai: the movie was good because it didn't try-and-fail to capture what the book does, which boils down to the power of humor
mircea_popescu: so then why'd you mention the book.
adlai: the One Flew movie is a great movie though, in its own right. it's orthogonal to the book
mircea_popescu: notably, he didn't hate it for any reason, other than being a vocal leader in the "book was better" chorus ; and for the director very sensibly removing the chief narrator clingwrap.
adlai hasn't read the book
adlai: well i guess mcmurphy is the "main character", but the book has a narrator. i'm not sure i've seen a movie yet where narration didn't interfere with the story
mircea_popescu: imo this is one of those situations where the better movie makes the book its bitch. yes the book is longer and goes into more detail, as a book has space to do. but this is a twin edged sword
adlai: the book is quite different from the movie, in that the movie merely tells a story, whereas the book takes the slightest baby step towards actually placing you inside the main character's head
adlai: the movie is good, very good. but as long as the book's around, it'll only be second best
adlai almost wishes One Flew would've been a mediocre movie, then maybe more people would read the book
mircea_popescu: On occasion, the ability cannot adequately be portrayed by the medium used for the work. For example, a comic book cannot show how good a character's singing voice is, and a radio show would, at best, be forced to merely describe a character's great paintings.

mircea_popescu: asciilifeform but this is the problem of the bloody book. in "removing the requirement for a wot" it creates more problems than it resolves
