mircea_popescu: i don't imagine these people are all trillionaires and so couldn't possibly care less about a million-ish item, chiefly because the us has no trillionaires.
mircea_popescu: i don't get it, there's a price higher than list ?
ben_vulpes: i still don't buy this imperial unit drug trade thing, but never having seen either metric or us tonne of any kind of product, will have to defer to those claiming knowledge
ben_vulpes: no i don't actually remember any of these marvels
BingoBoingo: <mircea_popescu> what can i tell you ben_vulpes , i'm a writer not an engineer. i don't know so much about engines, just seemed to me like the right number. why, is it wrong ? << This actually might be most right
mircea_popescu: what can i tell you ben_vulpes , i'm a writer not an engineer. i don't know so much about engines, just seemed to me like the right number. why, is it wrong ?
mircea_popescu: http://btcbase.org/log/2017-05-17#1657329 << no you don't understand, they have really cool offices! google guy was one day walking down the mall to pick up an office, was really fascinated by mcdonalds kid section, said HELLO SIR I WANT HIRE OFFICE HERE PLEASE. ☝︎
ben_vulpes: and he asks why i don't burn down city hall.
scriba: Logged on 2017-05-16: [05:15:35] <pete_dushenski> http://btcbase.org/log/2017-05-15#1656143 << lol i'm afraid i don't understand this 'fix' well enough to implement on disposable craptops that actually have intel me on them. let me know if you take the plunge :)
mircea_popescu: also, i don't expect the hotel makes any money from the deal. they're giving the rooms away free. etc.
mircea_popescu: i don't get it, so india apparently sees a rider for the very first time, gets all excited ?
pete_dushenski: http://btcbase.org/log/2017-05-15#1656143 << lol i'm afraid i don't understand this 'fix' well enough to implement on disposable craptops that actually have intel me on them. let me know if you take the plunge :) ☝︎
mod6: not a year goes by that I don't read about some person who got drunk, fell asleep on their porch mid-winter, and loses some digits due to frostbite.
mod6: ya. i was just talking about this today, in fact. long story, but at the end, he fucked up, and how's he supposed to learn that he fucked up if no one slaps his dick and says "you fucked up, don't do it again" ?
mod6: <+mircea_popescu> on the upside, really can't be fired anymore. << probably not. i don't worry about it. if one door closes, another opens. besides, someday not too far off, this will be the thing.
asciilifeform: but sadly i don't have one.
ben_vulpes: i have seen this before, the continentals holding posts in usg bezzletrons, and i don't quite get how it makes sense. "we all went to hahvahd biz skool for credential washing to operate scammatronz", maybe?
ben_vulpes: "baby you are entirely capable of deducing what the new buttons do, i don't want to hear that kind of nonsense from you any more."
mircea_popescu: i don't get what it is supposed to do ?
a111: Logged on 2017-05-08 17:04 mircea_popescu: i don't think you either know or could meet if you dedicated a year to it someone possessed of an ai capable of identifying who the fuck to shoot.
Framedragger: yeah i don't, heh
Framedragger: i don't have a strong case but don't consider all of analytic philosophy to be just "public intellectuals". a *large lot* of it, sure, so makes sense to just dismiss all of it for the sake of saving time / internal sanity
mircea_popescu: that the rest of the crap ~dun work that way... hey. i thought that's mostly why you don't like the rest of the crap in the first place
mircea_popescu: i don't live in that reich.
mircea_popescu: but at least i don't throw it all out the window, so there's that.
mircea_popescu: ben_vulpes i thought it gets inherited. entirely likely i don't comprehend c loading model.
mircea_popescu: bitch, if you don't know who i am you already failed your job.
trinque: "uh I don't know, people started cutting their dicks as part of a mass mental breakdown. I think they had quite fair skin."
mircea_popescu: item dun really need so much power i don't think, but certainly used in the higher power tractors iirc.
ben_vulpes: it may take some time, especially at my glacial pace, but i think slicing the wallet from the reference implementation (which i don't think is going anywhere?) a worthwhile endeavour.
mircea_popescu: yes well i don't see that many phosgene to ac unit cia goons out there combing the streets.
phf`: come to think of it the whole exhaust in the kitchen applies to other cases where exhaust is mandatory: i like the small of soldering rosin or the smell of freshly sawed wood, but i wouldn't want to spend much time in a workshop that doesn't have an exhaust. and you have similar failure mode: "come all to work on projects!" hackerspaces notoriously don't have exhaust
phf`: ahaha, that's a great metaphor. i think somebody, possibly Gogol had some similarly visceral imagery, but i don't remember it as a phrase
phf`: there's too many places to name that fuck up the whole vent thing. there's a small cafe next to my apartment that i can't go to because they don't have exhaust. but i think it's a general "oh we need to cook? i'm going to replicate my mom's kitchen". at least they now all get proper stoves, probably after watching cooking shows where fire goes "woosh" when it's cooking
danielpbarron: i found a karaoke venue that lets me sing "offensive" songs. at some point after i finished singing one of my songs, a girl calls for my attention using my name. i don't recall what i said, but her reply was to say that i was "rude" to her. i lose interest and walk away. later on i'm outside having a smoke and she confronts me again. says she "has a bone to pick" with me about something she heard i had said to one of her male frien
gabriel_laddel_p: asciilifeform: I don't care about how long, just want the price
mircea_popescu: trinque i don't think they'll ever do something useful though, for the reason that it's useful. somehow the drones intuit and avoid any non-drony un-pointless meaningful activity.
trinque: I don't see how that follows.
trinque: but I don't want to overcomplicate things or this will be another round of "gentoo does not work"
asciilifeform: trinque: i'm particularly curious re how you trimmed modules. many crapolade modules don't give any obvious indication that they are useless, there is no mechanism for generating a list of 'THESE we actually need, because of the installed iron, and these -- not' ☟︎
mircea_popescu: with the mention that i absolutely don't see his point re chomsky ; but i do see his point re... himself.
asciilifeform: and i don't have the budget to put it on own t3 like trilema was put.
asciilifeform: but admittedly i don't mp-dns.
mod6: if i did something wrong here, i don't know, to this very minute what it is.
mod6: but i don't know html very well.
mod6: anyway, don't worry about it. just nuke the post I made, and I'll dump the unsigned text inthere.
mircea_popescu: and to continue the penitentiary discussion : i don't seem to see all the fuckwits insisting that black dudes being jailed constitutes some kind of racism etc notice that a) google will serve you the "37% non-hispanic blacks" figure on a search for "us inmate population by gender" front and center, because who cares what you're actually searching for, have some nigger figures in any case and b) there's only 12k women for 175k
a111: Logged on 2017-05-08 21:09 phf`: i think that traditionally would be called pogrom, rather than genocide. problem is that unlike jews, coptics, parsi, etc. american blacks don't have a culture to fallback to, and their persecution narrative is artificially constructed, so they just fall back. there's not going to be a tzadik in projects, unmovable, because torah told him to suffer
phf`: i dunno, i'm not convinced of that. orlol's target audience are cultural honkies, people who otherwise would be wiggers or otaku or "i'm irish, 5 generations ago". yes, those people don't have any culture, but it's chiefly american problem. i'm not convinced it extends to the rest of the world that well

ben_vulpes: asciilifeform: i don't get stuck in traffic
mircea_popescu: i don't think there exists more accessible sensitive photodiode.
asciilifeform: i always wondered why 'speed devils' don't drive hovercraft.
mircea_popescu: gizmolearner honestly i don't think anyone is. politics is like cleanning, nobody builds himself a lab for the joy of having to clean it up periodically.
mircea_popescu: i don't think you either know or could meet if you dedicated a year to it someone possessed of an ai capable of identifying who the fuck to shoot. ☟︎
Framedragger: there is that. i don't do lots of driving at all, and plan to avoid driving at night, ever. but, yeah, point taken.

mircea_popescu: http://btcbase.org/log/2017-05-08#1652989 << no, i have no objection to it being incomprehensible, it strikes me as nutty also. perhaps a major part of the explanation is that whenever i don't remember something i just pick a girl who likely doesn't know it, ask her about it, and when she doesn't know it she gets ordered to research it. another part of it, maybe even larger, is that the stuff that actually interests me isn't ☝︎
gizmolearner: I don't even know how they reversed the huffman coding in the first place since the table is buried in PCH ROM.

ben_vulpes: i don't need a new motherfucking surface area problem on top of my drinking problem
ben_vulpes: trinque: I DON'T WANT THE MOTHERFUCKING ZEROS
trinque: man I just figure that pair of blurs in front of me on teh highway is something I don't want to drive into
ben_vulpes: i don't get lafond's fixation on failure to do anything about people shooting up in plain sight
ben_vulpes: http://logs.bvulpes.com/trilema?d=2017-4-30#bb66f450-218d-4f54-88d8-6fb65645d474 << so given that the difference would be that the old auto_ptr didn't have shared semantics and that the unique_ptr does but they're never used because they weren't available at the time, i don't expect grief to come of it.
gabriel_laddel_p: Also, I read the logs and don't need to be notified of their contents.
a111: Logged on 2017-05-05 15:18 trinque: I don't run JS in either case
Framedragger: http://btcbase.org/log/2017-05-05#1652110 << and yeah to be clear i did skip this consciously, knowing that i'd be stepping into a swamp. and while i'd very much like to embrace http://btcbase.org/log/2017-05-05#1652126 , it is the case that i'd like to be able to archive shitsites which don't render without JS. ☝︎☝︎
mod6: i don't fuck around with it comes to atm
fromloper: I don't think the current version does anymore. All the FPGA images are XDP3 or XDP4. I know older versions of System Debugger had support for older XDPs. If you have a student email you can get System Studio for free and it has access to older versions which might support it.
fromloper: I'm at an inital research stage at this point if it pans out they have a heavier NDA and you can buy the private tools. At this point I'm just doing proof of concept so I don't want to invest too much if it doesn't pan out.
fromloper: Looks like the original has scrolled off, so I don't know
mircea_popescu: but i certainly don't delegate the authority to some bouncer. wtf is this, the chinese imperial court ?
phf`: i take it, you don't use a bouncer, it's a long running xchat from your bunker?
mircea_popescu: basically it's 95% fail hits, most because no vocabulary. i don't think it'd pass the baccalaureate. wtf is wrong with people
mod6: fwiw, i don't emacs or whatever it is.
mircea_popescu: i don't expect by now there's any relation whatsoever between the mouth-like organ and the arm-like organ of the vaguely organised amoeba colony.
trinque: man I don't want to read every livejournal before condemning
trinque: I don't run JS in either case ☟︎
danielpbarron: i don't know, but the levels of tritium at ground zero were much higher than what you'd expect

mircea_popescu: yes, it sounds way the fuck better in the abstract (if you're clueless, entirely devoid of either experience, any faculty for thought and any inclination to resolve either). but it's the same god damned thing -- the desire of "visual thinkers" to introduce new glyphs in the alphabet so they don't get "constrained" in their "creativity" by the present set exactly mirrors the need of the house fly to get some garbage going so i
ben_vulpes: endless lulzrabbit hole, this: "I seriously considered quitting the industry in 1997 when Apple Computer was concluding its acquisition of NeXT. Imagine if the president of General Motors said, in 1997, "It has come to my attention that our cars are kind of clunky and unreliable. Don't worry, though. We're rectifying this problem by licensing the blueprints to the 1985 Toyota Camry."
mod6: <+mircea_popescu> o hey, foundation owning shares, too ? << at first I was thinking that these might need to be realised into btc and sent to the addy... but i don't see any restrictions on asset ownership. as long as jurov writes in a line item in the report at least.
ben_vulpes: i don't think so, no
phf: girl's been sick, and i don't think damp cold cavernous air is going to do her good
Framedragger: (nice quoted bit, too, i see the relation, i don't agree that bitbet can be modelled as "just opinions", but w/e)
Framedragger: mircea_popescu: i don't believe i have
mod6: but chalking it up to I don't know what I'm doing quite yet.
Framedragger: well, i don't have good track record here, so eh
Framedragger: mircea_popescu: well, while i of course agree in general, i don't agree in particular: i'd certainly find it useful to be able to supply a "curl phuctor stats every 24h, serve here" instruction. or, you know, "submit key", or "comments", or anything else of the sorts.
Framedragger: mircea_popescu: alright, more than that: i place higher odds of usd surviving in 2050 if put against btc surviving in 2050. why: a very primitive "age of existence" heuristic. and, i don't trust EC crypto, like, you know, no-one here does. so not willing to put retirement savings into btc. it adds up, utilities, retirement.
Framedragger: mircea_popescu: there is that. point is, world is ~sheep (when approximated/rounded), they have fiatbux/lifedebtbux, they don't care about these things, intel's profits come at scale, hence investing into "decent tech" is not business-viable. is all i'm sayin'.
mircea_popescu: i don't see much thinking outside of tmsr et all.
Framedragger: anyway, i don't see much outrage in regards to intel ME outside of tmsr et al.
mircea_popescu: i don't get what the problem with colocating boxes is supposed to be. pro tip : every box in every rack in every datacenter on planet earth WAS COLOCATED THERE.
Framedragger: mircea_popescu: i'll mention one thing tho: you cited "$10k+ / year" figures and all that, but just ftr i don't believe the actual *profit margin* (vs. revenue) would be decent. that said, this should of course be researched.
diana_coman: and I don't claim competence in mountaineering or whatevers
