phf: programmer's stone made a point long time ago that you need to be really fucking relaxed to write quality code

phf: i've been low-key reviving cmucl's hemlock, can't use portable hemlock nor climacs for that matter, because neither have terminal versions. needless to say the process is slow and painful. like right now i'm trying to figure out why scrolling the buffer is slow slow you can see each individual line redrawing. also arrow keys don't work
mircea_popescu:
phf yes, lua was build in-house by the brazillians trying to you know, be independent state.
mircea_popescu:
phf even limiting the matter to ttfs (seriously, postcript is a whole extra layer of crazy) one quickly discovers some very serious conceptual problems. i don't even mean from a technological pov.

trinque:
phf: what do you run plan9 userland on?
trinque:
phf: dunno that I'm making an argument for anything *else* either
mircea_popescu: seems evident the correct solution is to get that proper lisp bootstrap i was discussing with
phf and then re-write emacs in it.

phf: we had a thread when diff was first discussed as a way to do patches (i think maybe before even v), where i was erring on the side of no unicode support on the grounds that if we decide to support unicode we have to, to borrow asciilifeforms, drink the whole spittoon
a111: Logged on 2015-10-31 16:24
phf: some hypothetical b-a os and internal consistency of the whole model. if you say "we support utf-8" here, you're also saying "we support unicode x.y" everywhere
a111: Logged on 2015-10-31 16:22
phf: but i'm not talking about diff specifically, i'm saying that whatever decissions are being made about diff now are going to influence the kind of work we'll have to do in the future

phf: Framedragger: yeah, bug in the router, can access as
http://btcbase.org/patches (which i know is confusing since it's also /log/), but obviously needs to be fixed
trinque:
phf: so like, import them, man.

phf: even as late as late '90s, machines with such 'feel' were made.
mircea_popescu: i'm still giving
phf his space to figure out his feelings re lisp archive.is
mircea_popescu: and from my pov, V is truly great in the sense that it allows a very simple test for when april next rolls around.
phf's viewer trivially allows to see what signatures are actually active in the deployed branches of republican code. join that set with the set of box owners and you have a very good first approximation of the l1.
mircea_popescu: ie, ssh moduli breakage didn't sink
phf's lisp-frail stack. but it did sink YOURS
mircea_popescu: Framedragger your scriba could crawl all links in chan and archive them.

phf: the "bright CLIM future" doesn't have html/css/js/ any parsing at all in it.
gabriel_laddel:
phf: anyways, I only think we'll be using the browser as a tool to suck information out of into CLIM in the near future.

trinque:
phf: nah, didn't get exactly what they wanted, are now shitting themselves in defiance
mircea_popescu: oh the flowchart thing. i suspected it's what
phf made the v charts with :p
pete_dushenski: anyways,
phf's line is but one example. the corpse that was my 'trb history' should serve as the only proof required that i have deeply nfi which way is up in the cs field and that is has ~zero to do with maths.

phf: and for the record, read in python doesn't ever fail, what fails is elevation from str to unicode that implicitly happens in places, like when you do "print" or inside the html encoder or whatever. the correct way is to treat "str" as a byte sequence, and explicitly do encode/decode when appropriate.

phf: there's a dodgy israeli coffee shop in the neighborhood (they make shakshuka and burek though, which are good, when the israeli guy is running the kitchen), which is a favorite meeting spot for local "career" women. i just spent about an hour half listening to a conversation, and for the love of me i can't figure out what it's about.
