asciilifeform: thing is, imho world is not made of us and of derps, or rather it ~is~ but rather like a mountain of lamproite
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: i just uncrated my '92 incidentally
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: the backplate is a little wobbly
asciilifeform: i am disappointed in the bizarre physical design of that
asciilifeform never had the 92 before
BingoBoingo: asciilifeform: Mine has a pretty solid backplate, is the backplate switch in the "locked" position?
asciilifeform: it is.
asciilifeform: i might end up putting some 3m double-sided sticky under it.
asciilifeform: my unit is a '92 plus' btw.
BingoBoingo: Huh, where did your some from. Mine claims heritage from "IMHS 40" "16"
asciilifeform: if yours is a plain 92, you can make (theoretically) rom cartridges.
BingoBoingo: Ah, mine is plain 92
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: mine is unmarked.
asciilifeform: and looks more or less virginal.
asciilifeform: as in, no dust, no fingerprints
asciilifeform: no boy cheated on his exams with this one.
BingoBoingo: Mine has some scars
BingoBoingo: But beautiful screen
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: put lithium 'aa' cells in it.
BingoBoingo: <asciilifeform> if yours is a plain 92, you can make (theoretically) rom cartridges. << /me theoretically would kind of like to port this software to "Mac Classic" which is too slow to be useful as B&W Mac

BingoBoingo: Works like my 89 did to my best memory, green diamond
asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: what fw ver in yours ? i have 1.05, june the 6th 1999

asciilifeform: they are ~exactly~ the same but for the keyboard, iirc.
BingoBoingo: Sold 89 book with 89 back in college for booze money

BingoBoingo: WHen found out since my college did not do applied math did not need calculator
asciilifeform lolz at the external display port on the '92
BingoBoingo: I have to admit I kinda want to put some games on it and spend a day riding the Metro Link in St Louis
asciilifeform: it is more or less the perfect 'game boy' form factor, aha
BingoBoingo: Better than Gamboy in terms of screen by far
asciilifeform: play 1-bit audio through the i/o jack !
BingoBoingo: Seriously

BingoBoingo: lol Gameboy was not backlit in any meaningful way
asciilifeform only ever saw it in pictures
BingoBoingo: I even remember the "front lit" accessory
BingoBoingo: Consisted of magnifying lens and lamp in frame
asciilifeform: btw magnifiers are old hat for tiny screens
asciilifeform: my grandfather had a tv (one of the early ru tv sets) that came with a gigantic flask you would fill with water and affix to the screen

phf: ag3nt_zer0: i couldn't get past his west vs. east chapter, or slightly after. his understanding of eastern tradition is dodgy (i see same issue with evola by the way), since he exists in the time after theosophists's liberal translations of sacred texts, but before people like mircea eliade or theos bernard had a chance to verify with the locals whether or the understanding was correct. (and long before easterners themselves started making

ag3nt_zer0: phf: interesting. becauseas I understand it guenon used to travel in the theosophist circles in france until he rejected them in favor of a more rigorous "traditionalism" - he even wrote a book about it - Theosophy: history of a pseudo religion - I think it was called... so i guess it could be asserted that he was still "unconsciously" operating under some of their errors but 1) it seems odd to think that a person with an
ag3nt_zer0: own unconsciousness… no?
ag3nt_zer0: and 2) what would be the correct understanding that contradicts his greater metaphysical points about ultimate reality and what constitutes an authentic revealed tradition or not... what do you mean by the locals? and would not Ananda Coomaraswamy, geunons contemporary and equal in many ways but with a mind turned toward the art of the east and west be a counter to that?
ag3nt_zer0: phf: thanks for checking out out btw
ag3nt_zer0: it out jeez
phf: ag3nt_zer0: theosophy does completely fanciful free interpretation based on amateur translations by various aristocrats gone native. any sane person will look at it and go "wtf" upon closer inspection, but you're still left with amateur translations. not to mention that you need representatives of traditions to interpret those esoteric texts (what i mean by locals)
phf: guenon's revelations are entirely his own, inspired perhaps by close reading of some of the available eastern sacred texts
trinque: closest I ever came to reading any "theosophy" was Jiddu Krishnamurti
trinque: and looking back I couldn't tell you wtf he was trying to say
trinque: something vaguely approaching the limitations around what can and cannot be said about being
trinque: and one's probably much better off reading Wittgenstein or Heidegger

phf: theosophy did one good thing, their "members" would do early translations of various sacred texts, and they would make those translations available through their lodges
phf: the translations are universally bad, but gave westerners first glimpses of "eastern thought"
ag3nt_zer0: trinque: yes. one is better off reading wittgestein or heidegger over the theosophical trash... but imo guenon, schuon, coomaraswami (ananda) and evola are infinitely better to read than those philosophers you mentioned - and they are not at all aligned with theosophy - except for guenons youthful foray into it as mentioned
phf: as far as ultimate knowledge, different schools have contradictory answers to some of those fundamental questions (say samkhya vs advaita vedanta's take on self vs absolute)
phf: the assumption that there's any kind of unity to eastern sacred thought is by the way theosophical in nature, where's you have a bajilion of lineages all with their own takes on what's true

phf: another point i'll make before checking in for the night, is that eastern mystical tradition is experiential, a lot of ideas of the nature of ultimate reality and such are not even worth contemplating until you go through whatever the lineage prescribes, meditation, purification practices, breathing exercises, physical exercises, that are supposed to bring you towards understanding of ultimate reality. talking about it or presenting second
phf: hand revelations as some sort of ultimate truth completely contradicts the original intent.
