bounce: ah, you're sure you're not looking for abuse, down the hall?
dub: holding a whole countries shit down while motherfuckers slipped
bounce: (which is of course the embodiment of the white man's evil nature that needs urgent atonement, and nevermind that the scary brown people down in africa practiced it just as much if not more... and to an extent still do)
mircea_popescu: minnesota is very down on jacking off
mircea_popescu: same thing with cops. people don't like the psychopatholgy of policemen, but then again the same "people" are lying and trying to beat down the cop two dozen times a day
thestringpuller: What it boils down to is many people feeling upset that the video game space has been so heavily politicized with a left-leaning, feminist-driven slant," he said.
mircea_popescu: ibm actually has a nice building down here. my lawyer rents a floor from them
asciilifeform: ben_vulpes: surely you meant - 'down' ?
ben_vulpes: well, a face, and then rotate 180 setting the piece down on the spacers again before clamping to get the machine to define your planes of perpendicularity.
moriarty: you may act individually, but your response to feedback from the market constraints that individuality, and as a whole, the market acts very mechanistically, well, if you can pin it down of course
bounce: hmno. you're mistaking your peers keeping you down with the humility needed to climb up by yourself
moriarty: asciilifeform, i see the points made there, make it high level enough that you don't need to get bogged down by the side-work in the midst of pursuing your main objectives
moriarty: decimation, and those down the value chain, i.e. the grant writer
xmj: no, i mean, they're incentivized to stay down
moriarty: imagine, if you wrote down six majors you thought you wanted to do in order of preference, only to be given your last choice
moriarty: xmj, a balance between welfare state and free markets, and how much of a blend depends partly on the origins of the country, a la its constitution, and the culture trickled top down from previous political establishments a la informal variant of the constitution
moriarty: mircea_popescu, i've done a sybil on localbitcoins though :) just so i don't get pinned down as the guy with shitloads of bitcoin

mircea_popescu: Everyone at the table told me that it was a "sure thing" which I found preposterous. But then, Cobin, his partner and Ken started talking about putting a down payment on the property with a "rubber cheque". They were essentially saying that we would give the owner a cheque that had no real money backing it and then raise the funds to buy the property.
mircea_popescu: We sat down for dinner in Santiago with John Cobin and his partner who had brought us the property and that's when things started to get strange. Cobin and his partner had some bizarre plan to zone a few thousand acres with 3,000 lots including golf courses, hotels and all manner of grandiose things. They actually had a business plan that went into the billions of dollars in revenue.
The20YearIRCloud: And from what i've personally seen, working with people who buy, own ,maintain , manage, get divorced, declare bankrupcy, have their house burnt down, find radon/asbestos/lead paint, that overall real estate isn't a bad investment for your common guy
decimation: asciilifeform: my favorite quote from "in the first circle": "A familiar figure in many prison research establishments, Professor Chelnov, an old mathematician arrested seventeen years ago and who, when he had to fill in a form, put down his nationality not as 'Russian' but as 'zek', had applied his mind to many inventions, from the direct flow boiler to the jet engine, and had put his heart and soul into several of them."
