Apocalyptic: mircea_popescu, I see, so not the very sort graham would like to hire
mircea_popescu: well... the sort he claims he wants to hire, but then ends up with perople like altman
mircea_popescu: in all respects the exact opposite (no intelligence, all rulebook)
mircea_popescu: "assbot: Wealth: The Toxic Byproduct | Melting Asphalt " << bwahaha ok.
mircea_popescu: The piece is a thinking man's struggle to understand the value of his profession. By Somers' own reckoning, his accounts are out of balance. He's paid handsomely, but the work is trivial. As he says:
mircea_popescu: Most of what we’re doing, in fact, is putting boxes on a page.... We fill our days with the humdrum upkeep of these boxes: we change the colours; we add a link to let you edit some text; we track how far you scroll down the page.... Web development is more like plumbing than any of us, perched in front of two slick monitors, would care to admit.
mircea_popescu: Somers' anguish is palpable, and his catalogue of self-effacing remarks reads like an apology. He heaps criticism on himself, his job, and his entire profession. "Web start-up companies are like play-companies," he laments. Their products are "cheap, fun, and about as worldchanging as creating a new variation on beer pong."
mircea_popescu: and incidentally, we have "inventors" defined, if anyone's still curious.
mircea_popescu: they "create" a new variation on beer pong.
mircea_popescu: need to keep importing new turnips because the citizen turnips are too likely to understand harlan ellison ranting in his native tongue.

mircea_popescu: "Assume you can only pass two things through the window — francs and sacks of grain. Knowing that the Congo is one of the poorest countries on the planet, what strategy will you pursue in order to do the most good for their society?"
mircea_popescu: fucking retards these people.
mircea_popescu: adlai: this article is more thought-provoking than most drugs out there << no, it's not thought provoking.
mircea_popescu: that article is the exact equivalent of masturbation, intellectually : it contains nothing that can even remotely be considered a thought, while keeping the mind spinning.
mircea_popescu: if you must participate in the empty calorie fest of religion, at least pick something respectable rather than the neo-neo-protestant bullshit made by people that are not even less intelligent than that smith fellow with the "ancient egyptian" tablets at the bottom of his hat
mircea_popescu: but much less well read to boot.
mircea_popescu: i doubt anyone could have imagined in the xixth century that anythign less intelligent than us neoprotestantism could be borne by the world. and yet... they've done it again.
decimation: mircea_popescu: once folks have eliminated all possibility of the supernatural, they gotta worship something, why not the local market?
mircea_popescu: you can't worship a thing that exists.
mircea_popescu: if you're going to live in a house, it's generally a better idea to get a house than cobble together something which, to the best of your abilities, is a house.
mircea_popescu: and if you're going to worship, pick something that's at least as well designed as reality permits
mircea_popescu: but no, this never-ending american exceptionalism, where if they never wash baths don't exist and joe squarejaw invented "humidification", this process whereby you dab parts of yourself with a wet cloth.
mircea_popescu: also known as a whore bath in the rest of the world, except joe squarejaw has never heard of the rest of the world.
decimation: yeah, america has a pretty strong tradition of 'history doesn't matter, the world is getting better, we are an outpost of the future, etc'
mircea_popescu: "You begin to wonder if you should feel guilty taking all this money from the poor Congolese — who are now (you must conclude) even poorer as a result." << because that's what money is, right ? a fetish.
mircea_popescu: if someone sent 10mn btc to the black hole, we'll all be even poorer as a result. because reasons.
mircea_popescu: and larger amounts of number.
mircea_popescu: and velocity of money never happened. and understanding consists of daydreaming, and everyone's the same and random nitwits that never killed a man are now allowed to make moral judgements
mircea_popescu: ima go stomp kittens, this shit's too much.
decimation: yeah I read it as pure narcissism masquerading as ideas
mircea_popescu: some years ago i went to timisoara, which is a tiny city in eastern europe, and fancies itself important but really it's a sort of romania's pittsburgh.
mircea_popescu: then some time last year i left.
mircea_popescu: by this logic, seeing how the total value of all assets in that city is probably south of a billion dollars, my leaving constituted a loss of more than half its wealth
mircea_popescu: and i should perhaps feel bad, because whatever, if you have money it's not your money. it's some other dudes'.
mircea_popescu: just like that, they happened to be in the way. because wealth is a sort of rain.
decimation: the god of market morality said so
mircea_popescu: let us not get into shape but instead sit on the couch and wax poetic about what men should be doing and what the definition of womanhood is ; let us not have a clue nor try to get a clue, but instead wax poetic on what money is and what other people should be doing with it and what it all means.
mircea_popescu: im so sick of the civilisation of marauding impotence it can scarcely be put into words.

mircea_popescu: the history of this "industry" term is so funny.
mircea_popescu: you will notice it is only used by people who are pointedly not involved in any sort of industrial matter.
mircea_popescu: it got started by the virtual schmucks of hollywood trying to give themselves some word based weight
mircea_popescu: much like all the shitty studios of the 50s were called like "empire" and "megaultra" etc.
mircea_popescu: then, the porn people picked it up. it was a very tongue in cheek sort of thing, originally, like a mockery of hollywood.
mircea_popescu: but that generation soon got pushed out by the tpg braindamaged set, and what was once irony became cereal.
mircea_popescu: and from there, via warriorforum and the nerve centers of "i failed local college business school" braindamage... it's in every confidence scam on the webs.
mircea_popescu: (tpg = thumbnail preview gallery, at the time an innovation that consisted of putting eight, then six, then four then three pics in a row and filling pages with such rows. each pic ideally linked to the material (more pics of the same set). then that evolved into the skim, where some pics are linked to whatever junk being sold etc.)
adlai: we could replace the term with "commons", to remind the participants that by shitting in the reservoir, they sully their own soup too. eg, "garza is a prominent scammer in the bitcoin commons", "bitcoin is causing a power shift in the pornography commons", etc

mircea_popescu: on the 0 1 infinity scale i readily see why 1 rather than 0, i just don't grok why infinity rather than one.
adlai: there are also two ways of interpreting this question - "why would other people want to use it", or "why would adlai want more people to use it"

mircea_popescu: nothing at all. (note that i use "moral" properly, not in the bastardized form common among the plethora of would-be stalins without the ballsack.)
mircea_popescu: let's put it in more general terms. you're proposing to lower the bar of what constitutes a qualified investor.
mircea_popescu: you propose this as an obvious good.
mircea_popescu: i dun see the obviousness and hence the inquiry.
adlai: i'm not proposing to lower it to the ground, scalpl works quite badly on small accounts, and even with the usability changes i'm imagining, it'll be easy to footgun without either my help or some level of understanding on behalf of the shooter

adlai: and if morality is part of the question... deep down, i'm one of those software freedom zealots. not quite to the point of GPLing everything i write, but yes to the point of sharing my work.
mircea_popescu: ie it still doesn't answer my oreiginal curiosiuty
mircea_popescu: this has little to do with the software in question mind.
adlai: why not? i've written something useful, i'm trying to make it more useful, and i _believe_ (ie, an opinion more grounded in emotion than evidence) that the right thing to do is share this
adlai: what's missing from answering your original question?
mircea_popescu: all of it.
mircea_popescu: why do you propose it as a good.
mircea_popescu: i can readily construct a scenario where it harms, if it helps.
adlai: please do, i'm typing up another answer attempt meanwhile
mircea_popescu: okay. suppose currently robot has use cost X, expressed in some translated value of he sophistication/time/etc needed to use it.
mircea_popescu: suppose you move it to X-e
mircea_popescu: this increases the pool of users from U to U+x. the average sophistication of x is < than the average of U. in fact it's common even if we won;t rely on it that the peak of x is under the lowest of U.
mircea_popescu: this will increase failures from F to F+y, where y/F > x/U > e/X
mircea_popescu: this is the definition of harm.
adlai: we know nothing about failure rates from outside U, or failure rates of the original users after more have joined
mircea_popescu: in which case at most we can't say whether it's a good or bad idea, and shouldn't bother with it at all ?
adlai: the way scalpl works currently, you can use it badly and lose money, just like with any investment; and that is likely to never change
mircea_popescu: yes, but by the time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQ7mhLp0abU get involved, you know they'll mostly lose.

mircea_popescu: if they didn't mostly lose, they wouldn't be "homicide da union", they'd be the cupcakes and crumpets core.

decimation: adlai: us law has a funny way of being misinterpreted by those to whom it would advantage
decimation: for instance, what do you think "public meeting" means?
adlai: moe levin (conference organizer) has already gone on the public record saying that talks and Q&A sessions will be recorded and recordings subsequently uploaded, further eroding whatever "reasonable expectation of privacy" could be claimed

decimation: yes, but my point is that if a policeman is so inclined, he may throw you in jail, charge you, and you get to make these kinds of arguments to a local prosecutor and then maybe a judge
decimation: ben_vulpes: do you fly gliders? that's a neat hobby
ben_vulpes: not i but a good friend.
decimation: my only problem is that it seems somewhat dangerous
