asciilifeform: it is difficult to conceive of a dumber choice of place to move to, for orc surgeon, than usa
mircea_popescu: and underutilized elite "i'm a nigger stomper, but '''we just don't do that in my country'''"will find their actual useful levbel.
phf: obviously "i was a surgeon back in my country!1" doesn't ever translate, but ~surgeons~ will easily find their place amongst other countries surgeons
mircea_popescu: whole fucking 1990s fiction is ALL ABOUT this, "holy shit mom, i thought i was a type, turns out reality's untyped!"
mircea_popescu: it's a purely internal thing.
mircea_popescu: this is an iffier point. i didn't meet that many altogether. moreover, i didn't discount the "friend of a friend" stories out of hand.
phf: me and asciilifeform have respective selection biases. i don't know any russian professor cab drivers, but plenty of NIH department heads, doing their half science half politikin on the new territory. presumably there's also a world of russian escapees who are driving cabs, that i'm just not connected to
mircea_popescu: what target countries value ideologically is uninteresting. but what they value on the sane basis of valuation, can't be ignored. so if you mix "the french really liked ukr chicks" in there we'll have to distinguish what does "the french" mean, ie, what portion they like because them bitches can suck a golf ball through a garden hose and what portion because they read in paris match that they should.
asciilifeform: phf: belenko, perhaps ultimate stereotypical escapee ( stole no less than a mig-25 ! ) iirc was last seen selling used cars.
asciilifeform: the 'college' racket is no sort of 'investment in elite' , in usgdom, rather it is a mechanism for assigning ~everyone a debt of $maxint de jure so that their moneys can be harvested at will later, should they happen to come across any
phf: people who ~escaped~ from oboronka, back when it still meant something in the early 80s, say, were granted a perceived elite status in u.s. i don't know anyone with that connection who's sweeping floors at mcgrooders, but plently of "NII engineers"
phf: fwiw, the reason it's friend of a friend, is because su was good at compartmentalization. my grandparents didn't talk about ~anything~ at all at home (and still warned my mom to never talk about anything she hears at home) until after the collapse
asciilifeform: and it expected a return
asciilifeform: but plenty of friend-of-a-friend-says-that-his-great-uncle-... etc.
asciilifeform: i'm yet to read a neutral (i.e. from original documents) account of such a thing -- in modern (1970s+) period
mircea_popescu: re later, nobody fucking bothered to pay room and board for some idle schmuck that was too dumb to leave himself in the first place. re former, of fucking course they kept pretending to importance for a day or two, it's what statal socialism is built out of : the organised pretense to importance.
phf: asciilifeform: that's not true, re no arrests, and there's a lot of creative variations on "sacked from sugary professorships"
mircea_popescu: in a sense that "mutual responsibility" is never a genuine concern, but out and out fraternizing with the enemy.
phf: in a sense that fuck relatives, or in a sense that arrest of the escapee relatives was not a thing?
mircea_popescu: phf the specific phrasing of protective female bullshit (PFB) is studied in a different discipline, but sure.
phf: to be fair i heard that one as "i didn't get out, because knew for a fact that $old-relative will get in trouble"
asciilifeform: mircea_popescu: i can't comment on ro emigres, but with su world there was a lulzy twist : 1st wave (1970s -- largely j000z!11) wrote home, 'i'ma full professor and it rocks, come on over', 2nd wave went, to discover that market -- glut, and hello cab ☟︎
mircea_popescu: the fact that elites failed to defect is a very sad testament on the structurally broken in the head nature of postmodern elites. something we know as jwz-ism today, but has preexisted jwz.
mircea_popescu: http://btcbase.org/log/2017-06-08#1667166 << #1 bullshit of 20something fuck-market-value females with a chance to get out was "wut if i never see $old-relative ever again!!1". ☝︎
asciilifeform: 'bbbut i know a d00d who couldn't get out' 'did he go to north kr ?' 'yes...' 'was he a baptist missionary...' 'yes...' 'which is a jailable offense there..' 'DISGUSTING untermenschen!!!howdarethey'
asciilifeform: astonishing, how the militantly retarded can make what seems like simple problem -- to get raw bytes in/out of a comp -- into a near-impossibility
shinohai: BingoBoingo was right, it's a snore. On to other things. >.>
BingoBoingo: Maybe? Prolly best to instead do a seperate headline for each story
shinohai: Imma have to do a shitcoin roundup this week it appears: http://archive.is/PajQy
BingoBoingo: Meh, his written statement makes him sound like a nervous aspie a la Elliot
pete_dushenski: speaking of dakar, the red bull team uses kamaz 4326 trucks! (with a mental 1000hp diesel engine). seen here in action : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FcEuuakWPg
mircea_popescu: o ya. it's a primo apc.
BingoBoingo: Ah, I would have expected a Unimog given the terrain description
mircea_popescu: BingoBoingo actually i don't think i ever bought a non-german car.
BingoBoingo: <mircea_popescu> speaking of old hardware, /me just bought a bmw 320i from 2005. << Oh my, A German!
ben_vulpes: "i wouldn't be a member of any club that wouldn't fall all over itself to have me in it" or how did it go
ben_vulpes: i burn petrol very intentionally, in a curated set of petrol-combusting platforms.
pete_dushenski: it's like 'i don't think she'd be a good fuck because too prudish'. well, go fuck and see if your armchair assessment is accurate ?
ben_vulpes: derivatives are a thing, matching them a skill.
ben_vulpes: 'tis one thing to press bae back in her seat with a downshift, another altogether to rattle the whole crew around as the vehicle rattles around its hysteresis envelope as the geartrain and suspension return to steady-state

mircea_popescu: i wouldn't want a purely automatic gearbox in this country mostly because of the grades they got.
mircea_popescu: some sort of weird nazi manual without a clutch pedal.
mod6: i should note, that if you end up setting a default run-level with wpa_supplicant to debug some stuff, ensure that you disable this. you want to remove that with `rc-update delete wpa_supplicant`. then add `rc-update add net.wlan0 default` in its place. this, at least for me, fires up the adapter and negotiates with the AP at boot time.
mircea_popescu: speaking of old hardware, /me just bought a bmw 320i from 2005.
mod6: <+asciilifeform> http://btcbase.org/log/2017-06-07#1666939 << mega-informative, lol << haha, it's a thinkpad E560 ☝︎
mod6: <+danielpbarron> mod6, if you get wifi working can i get a recipe? << sure thing
ben_vulpes: > While America may be a nation divided on policies, we are a country that stands united in condemning Linux in all of its very ugly forms.
whaack: I've taken a few Spanish classes throughout school, I'm using duolingo, reading Breaking Out of Beginner's Spanish http://b-ok.org/book/1160411/3c0465, moving to CR (went there for 10 days, loved it), reading a textbook (Nexos) ☟︎
trinque: gonna depend on chip quite a bit
danielpbarron: mod6, if you get wifi working can i get a recipe?
whaack: I'm leaving the US and going to Costa Rica in about a month. In the off chance anyone wants to make some btc by renting out a place there send a msg to my key. Any advice is appreciated as well ☟︎
asciilifeform: they configured a box some time back when alive, and now -- this.
trinque: whaack: hey, didn't you have a key and so on?
jhvh1: stormy with a chance of packeting
danielpbarron: the one i got it working on reports a slightly newer version, but i suspect this fix would work on the other one with same version
danielpbarron: i also got something to work that i had been stuck on for a while: lilo stalling on the bios data check. seems as though the solution is to use 'linear' rather than 'lba32' in etc/lilo.conf

trinque: diana_coman: girl's also part cherokee; apparently they'd solve the cognitive dissonance by saying "ah, her? she's got a man's spirit!" and leave it at that
diana_coman: trinque, perhaps; I don't quite buy this cutting off a tit but I can't say I spent a lot of time on it as such
trinque: my lady friend put it to me thus, that woman can behave like a man in certain realms, but often means cutting off a tit, like the (possibly apocryphal) amazon woman archer thing.
mircea_popescu: i dunno why the pantsuits were so aggro re trump's twitter account. whole fucking JOB is little more than a pretext for putting "trump official" on your twitter.
diana_coman: mircea_popescu, not sure I'd have less trouble finding a man really; I get what you mean though
a111: Logged on 2015-09-14 00:35 mircea_popescu: * trinque [...] a very angry man about why what I did was below what was expected of me << for the record, i don't think very much of this entire "expectations" verbiage/bs. if you think a little about it, so would you. a) what sort of fucking powerless vulnerable schmuck lets himself get into the position of DEPENDING on a kid ? that's what you're saying. don't say that, not only is it not true it's also very stupid.
trinque: http://btcbase.org/log/2015-09-14#1273331 << see here for the same passive aggressive thinking being thunked out of a slightly younger trinque ☝︎

mircea_popescu: asciilifeform http://trilema.com/2017/the-bitcoin-learning-tournament/ << there you go, a much more proper model of reality in terms of learning.
asciilifeform: ( theoretically -- a comp needs only fpga, a few nics, some memory, and a means of hooking up hdd )
asciilifeform: a board entirely like this, but minus all of the superfluous peripherals, and with sram in place of dram, would be quite spiffy ( i've a half-drawn one here, but it sits and waits for its hour )
asciilifeform: ( layout for high-speed fpga is a royal bitch )
asciilifeform: they didn't break anything, it's still a stock xilinx chip
asciilifeform: they sell a 1GB and 2GB dram version
mircea_popescu: this is a major development.
asciilifeform: this might sound like a snore, but isn't : thing is wires as 'port', rather than as bus
asciilifeform: in other noose, asciilifeform learned that a very recent chinese fpga board : AX516 ( http://esys.ir/images/img_Item/1158/Files/AX516_usermanual.pdf ) includes RTL8211EG , GB nic !! and cheapo.
asciilifeform: still a bit of a puzzler, who ~voluntarily~ uses the thing. 'why do you have an incense burner in your house?' 'they're required at church' 'yes but...'
asciilifeform: in other lulz, https://archive.is/pbE6V >> 'The user can choose a device number that corresponds to a terminal currently in use by another user. This allows an attacker to run any command allowed by sudo with read and write access to an arbitrary terminal device. ... As before, the bug is specific to Linux systems that have SELinux enabled ...'
mircea_popescu: lol @qatar dorks, "our commitment to the us is a solid commitment".
mircea_popescu: if nobody gives a shit, yes. if "social media storm", then not right off.
asciilifeform: trinque: it was a convenient cheat around the 'they cited 0 actual intel' thing
trinque: it's a move against trump, transparently.
asciilifeform: it was a snoar
asciilifeform: trinque: looked like a generic 'ohnoez ru hackingz' item
asciilifeform: they hire on a very late-sovok 'too dim to know what to steal and where to take it' principle
mircea_popescu: sure. still, this looks like a home office clerk rather than an actual contractor. woman had all the intellectual power of a pet goat.
asciilifeform: mircea_popescu: most 'intelligence komyooniti' folx slave for a nominally 'private' org, rather than for usg in the proper sense

asciilifeform: http://btcbase.org/log/2017-06-06#1666594 << ~anyone, supposing he has a u.s. passport, and 0 official record of judgements against him, can get 'top secret clearance' with corporate sponsorship. the filtration (i.e. who is permitted into any interesting 'compartment') comes ~after~ ☝︎
a111: Logged on 2017-06-06 20:55 asciilifeform: mmap is a unixism and returns a null ptr on failure
asciilifeform: http://btcbase.org/log/2017-06-06#1666711 << erratum -- it ain't (perhaps obviously) a null, it's a (void *)-1 ☝︎
a111: Logged on 2017-06-03 02:41 asciilifeform: you can't actually write a nontrivial c proggy without undefined behaviour.
asciilifeform: 'Existing implementations of mmap() return the value -1 when unsuccessful. Since the casting of this value to type void * cannot be guaranteed by the ISO C standard to be distinct from a successful value, this volume of POSIX.1-2008 defines the symbol MAP_FAILED, which a conforming implementation does not return as the result of a successful call.'
asciilifeform: but linus did love to brag, 'nobody promised you a stable abi', as if this were a point of pride.
asciilifeform: ( now that i think about it, we could also obtain the eggog code by invoking a mmap that will be certain to fail, and recording the result. but ugghh... )
asciilifeform: note, again, we cannot compare to -1, because we are using a sane language, where '-1' is not a valid address of anything, nor even a valid modular-type
asciilifeform: but it ain't a -1 to us, because we are using a sane language and it is treated ONLY as the addr of the beginning of the allocated mmap. but first gotta check for the failure. so this requires a comparison to FFFFF....[buswidthsize]
asciilifeform: ( because unix was dropped as a child, it uses in-band idiocy and magic failure values that are not type-distinguishable from successes )
asciilifeform: mmap is a unixism and returns a null ptr on failure ☟︎
asciilifeform: if a compiler won't eat it -- it's retarded and must die.
