lobbes: growing up near beaches, I got bored of them fast; can take em or leave em. and with my pale complexion the idea of visiting uruguay in the cooler months actually sounds nice
BingoBoingo: <mp_en_viaje> luzliest thing in latam, all sorta mini-super << I believe the sight that most excited ben_vulpes down here was "Supermercado Winn-Dixie"
lobbes: I may indeed take some time in the next months to make a trip down there at least. If anything to clear my head and sort some things out (plus, I've never met another Republican in the meat, so there is also that plus) ☟︎
a111: Logged on 2019-05-13 17:54 lobbes: I've been doing some hard thinking lately, about what I want in life, and about how I'm way too content with my current living situation in the reich. The problem is that man can indeed be content ~anywhere. Nevertheless, I find myself being sucked closer and closer to the intake of the mass chumpatron. My time, my money, my sanity, slowly but surely slipping away with each day
BingoBoingo: http://btcbase.org/log/2019-05-13#1913031 << If you've got some hands what Pizarro can really use is help on the outreach and conversion front. I'd also suggest making a run to Uruguay before picking Uruguay as your escape hole. ☝︎
BingoBoingo: I've not dealth with the stuff much here. Habitation module has electric stove built in.
mp_en_viaje: asciilifeform, i got gas stove here. what's wrong with that ?
BingoBoingo: <asciilifeform> i can't speak for erry type of orc, but in BingoBoingostan they aint even certain re what to do with ~mains current~, much less computer ( these are the people who set up indoor gas grills to cook dinner ) << Well in their language they call the mains "luz" so it does the lights.
asciilifeform: lobbes: i used to frequent such shops. they're all gone nao. from elementary 'giant sat in the chair' dynamic.
asciilifeform: i can't speak for erry type of orc, but in BingoBoingostan they aint even certain re what to do with ~mains current~, much less computer ( these are the people who set up indoor gas grills to cook dinner )
lobbes: hm, yeah, I guess so. Same as in usg; all independent harware shops disappearing
asciilifeform: lobbes: i will not go as far as to say 'hardware shop? poppycock' but it is roughly similar to idea of setting one up on the moon
lobbes: I've been doing some hard thinking lately, about what I want in life, and about how I'm way too content with my current living situation in the reich. a111: Logged on 2019-03-27 17:23 BingoBoingo: <mircea_popescu> (i kinda suspect BingoBoingo would do a lot better with a partner on the grounds, tbh) << I suspect similar
a111: Logged on 2017-05-24 21:57 asciilifeform: i'd be barfing harder if i hadn't 'seen this exact movie before', with ye olde robot
asciilifeform: http://btcbase.org/log/2019-05-13#1912999 << mp_en_viaje i have to plead 'guilty' to this. asciilifeform when younger many times 'went for broke', pawned shirt, and -- lost shirt. so has roughly same pov as bedouin has re water. ☝︎
asciilifeform: i suspect in bucharest the locals are moar preoccupied with finding 'sugar' jobs at microshit tentacle and saving up for miami
asciilifeform: although, next to that hotel i was in ( same 1 mp_en_viaje held c2 in ) , gigantic and apparently abandoned glass box bldg was having its roof methodically cut by scavengers with torches, quietly loaded each piece on truck and vanished before nightfall
asciilifeform: when i saw these, i was certain they had to be ruins (of the ru '90s 'walls carefully disassembled by scavengers' sort) -- but apparently not
mp_en_viaje: THIS, however, is as fine example of http://btcbase.org/log/2019-05-13#1912917 as could be had. gypsy boy'd have stayed. atm i suspect that's your exact opposite. ☝︎
asciilifeform: it suggested 'fuck i'm late' lol
asciilifeform: i saw several of these, we sat for a while tryin' to come up with synthetic language to speak lol
mp_en_viaje: anyway, to me it was very amusing because, on one hand, "hey nicoleci , where in chicago do i hire lawyer like this" and on the other hand, HOLY SHIT, it's not just computer programmer who goes to turn down volume and is there for two days rewriting the os.
asciilifeform: if it's the same fella asciilifeform met, i can picture this scene
mp_en_viaje: the place he had them stored in, he got just about the time i was leaving. so my box was in the bottom of the pit. "i must've been thinner then", he says, cuz well... couldn't get into there. eventuslly managed to squeeze in, sideways, but then, once got box... couldn't get back out.
mp_en_viaje: lol i suspected.
asciilifeform: let's put this way : if asciilifeform's dwelling were a sokoban level, i am not certain it would be a winnable level..
asciilifeform: i have other 'surplus' gear also, for folx who have a use; e.g. a 'icestick' (ice40 '4k' (half-size)) proto-board, buncha similars, at some pt i'll make list
a111: Logged on 2019-05-13 12:02 phf: i ought to just pick up that sony you've mentioned
asciilifeform: http://btcbase.org/log/2019-05-13#1912941 << if you like can have mine for cost of postage. pgpgram where to send it. i think i have a few spare batteries and external charger for'em also, somewhere ☝︎
asciilifeform: http://btcbase.org/log/2019-05-13#1912936 << supposedly something like 1000 dour emigres showed up with portraits in dc. but i did not see with own eyes. ☝︎
a111: Logged on 2019-05-13 12:10 mp_en_viaje: yeah, exactly why i didn't get a dslr mysle.f
asciilifeform: http://btcbase.org/log/2019-05-13#1912942 << i had one at 1 pt, sold it for the described reason and bought what is nao known as 'mp cam' in 2011. but earlier this yr retired it in favour of a recently introduced thing that is sorta in between the two, has removable lens but around half the mass of typical dslr. ☝︎
asciilifeform: in other noose, amd 'family 22' cpu (i.e. where they introduced fritz core in 2013) has obvious breakage in 'usg.random' instruction (also introduced then, in footsteps of intel) : https://archive.is/BMJwJ
mp_en_viaje: yeah, exactly why i didn't get a dslr mysle.f ☟︎
phf: i ought to just pick up that sony you've mentioned ☟︎
phf: i have a dslr that i got off somebody as debt repayment, which ended up putting me into a silly lock: it's heavy and not something you just grab with you, on the other hand i don't want to buy a smaller camera "since i already have dslr and i should sell it first", but then i also don't want to deal with selling it
phf: i didn't bother taking camera with me, because i didn't expect there to be any activity besides the parade, but the city was in full celebration mode
phf: it was probably the most engaged of all the celebrations i've seen here. we went to a hookah place, a kind of popular bar/restaurant: the staff were dressed in "military" outfits, there was a bunch of tables full of men eating and drinking vodka, making toasts to the fallen heroes and dead relatives
a111: Logged on 2019-05-10 00:41 asciilifeform: i wonder if phf got to see parade.
phf: http://btcbase.org/log/2019-05-10#1912257 << i can corroborate the sentiment, i didn't get to see the parade directly, but saw all the activity around it ☝︎
mp_en_viaje: this "sceptical" is very much the same story as afanti's [aka nasreddin] engagedment to teach the local baron's singing in a year, on the theory that "i am hungry now -- who knows what will be in a year". he's skeptical as to the future. you're not, you have a theory as to the future, the difficulties are in the implementation.
mp_en_viaje: prikoke == <XRevan86> asciilifeform: I'll stay sceptical for now.
asciilifeform: i kept waiting for the inevitable prikoke cite. where is it 1!!
asciilifeform: i've lived on the wage of unskilled labourer before. and not interested in doing it again, would rather be gassed.
asciilifeform: ... and i did have to go to it physically 1ce, to audition. and earlier, had to work in ninth circle of hell for 6mo+ while looked for it in the 1st place.
asciilifeform: billymg: for past coupla yrs i worked for folx who actually don't care where people live. but suppose it folds...
asciilifeform: billymg: it's very simple -- money. i work for living, and have never done it anywhere other than in the reich, 'meatwot' is there.
billymg: so i've always wondered what's kept you here
billymg: asciilifeform: if you don't mind me asking -- in that thread you made a good case for leaving the reich as soon as possible, but i've also seen threads (can't find right now) where others in the channel have tried to convince you of the same, without any luck
billymg: this is what i most want to avoid ☝︎
a111: Logged on 2019-05-12 19:14 asciilifeform: i.e. asciilifeform ported to pogo (even had working, save for the flash disk, netbsd port) , then the iron vanished from market long before achieved anyffin useful on it
mp_en_viaje: http://btcbase.org/log/2019-05-12#1912841 << pretty sure i still have some. ☝︎
asciilifeform: it aint stocked anywhere, last i saw.
bvt: well, those are devboards, i don't think anyone sells them as a serious item. but amateurs - buy
asciilifeform: 'ci20'. i picked one up in iirc 2015, it gathers dust
asciilifeform: ( beyond this, cannot comment, i do not have one. and i dun much like soldered-on-wifi boards, tbh )
asciilifeform: i recall this board, tho, rather costly imho for what's on it
bvt: i have an m.2 nvme ssd there, but the hw setup is convoluted enough to recommend bying *some other* board for these purposes
asciilifeform: bvt: you'd have to connect a real disk to have a useful trb, but otherwise i can't see why not
asciilifeform: i.e. asciilifeform ported to pogo (even had working, save for the flash disk, netbsd port) , then the iron vanished from market long before achieved anyffin useful on it ☟︎
bvt: i have a http://archive.is/EUW9n item at home, with kernel from some arm64 distro and pizarro rockchip rootfs, but i never got time properly setup this device (plan was, run trb node)
asciilifeform: i dun recall whether all the periphs worked
asciilifeform: iirc phf built a working c101 kernel (i.e. 3399)
asciilifeform: nao this ~may~ have changed some time in past yr, but i am loathe to bake new kernels when i have a working one.
a111: 2019-02-19 <ave1> Btw asciilifeform, I had to switch my cheap NFS account to a more expensive one as php 5.6 is no longer supported in their new setup. I expect that sometime, at the end of this year, 5.6 will also disappear from "production" sites.
bvt: could be, i never got to disassemble and check the board after changing wlan card.
asciilifeform: then again i do clean these things yearly.
bvt: it has an annoing problem of producing high-pitched noise when running with ext. input devices or wlan on, but overheat happends only after ~45 min of compiling, which i don't do any more.
asciilifeform: bvt: i had it overheat ~immediately when put under load with the 'rms coreboot', so went back to vendor's ( with above patch, or can't use civilized nic in it )
bvt: is it that much more stable with lenovo bios? i had it overheat with both orig. and coreboot variants, so stayed with coreboot
asciilifeform: at one time i had 'x61' also, but pronounced it sad and sent it to, iirc, gabriel_laddel
a111: Logged on 2016-03-03 20:46 asciilifeform: i eventually put back the heathen bios on the x60, BUT i ida'd it and nop'd out the imbecile nic whitelist
asciilifeform: ( http://btcbase.org/log/2016-03-03#1421281 << orig. , i think, thrd re this specimen ) ☝︎
bvt: at the time i was getting mine - only w. T2400 and iirc slower cpu were available
asciilifeform: the 1 i have , is this.
asciilifeform: i.e. 1 of their 1st amd64 clones
asciilifeform: bvt: i'ma have to boot mine up an' see , then, cuz it's defo running a 64bit errything.
bvt: hm. i have the same, but T2400 is 64bit in 'PAE' sense, not in register width sense.
asciilifeform: x60 is sadly rare nao, but the rubbish box i sent to spyked has same chipset, he can say later if confirms this benchmark.
mp_en_viaje: meanwhile in "shit, i forgot this article even existed", http://trilema.com/2014/the-fallacy-machine/#selection-141.0-141.788
asciilifeform: bvt: with straight (no asmisms) 64bit ffa, i found ~exactly 2x slower on x60 than on the 2393
asciilifeform: these won't win any speed records, but i like'em, they go years b/w downtimes no prob ( i take'em down strictly to clean fans )
asciilifeform: even mp_en_viaje's 'fx' i suspect.
asciilifeform: i expect in the end , say <100msec 4096bit modexp, will be achievable on typical irons
mp_en_viaje: not that he doesn't have a point, when dealing with morons gotta telegrap to the lizzardbrain. i don't speak to them either, just hands.
asciilifeform: mp_en_viaje: pre-barrett ffa , when rsaing, spends most of wallclock time in fz_mod , is all. which dun multiply. in 14+ , i fully expect 2-3x boost from asmism (possibly higher, with massage w/ magnifying glass for pipelineism etc )
mp_en_viaje: what the fuck, SIX fuckingreferences, i don't have any single one of them. wtf is a tony cox. what mahdi.
mp_en_viaje: bvt, i expect, yes. he's convinced otherwisw fo rsome reason.
asciilifeform: i fully expect that the asmistic branch of ffa will be sewn out of bvt's item
asciilifeform: mp_en_viaje: bvt's asmism is correct near as i can tell ( i have not walked with magnifying glass. ) the 1 gotcha is that the actual win from'em aint measurable until bolt'em onto ch14b+ ( where knuth's division is no longer the bulk of the cpu load )
mp_en_viaje: asciilifeform, well, i got a house, i thas a garden.
mp_en_viaje: i can say it is a lotta fun.
a111: Logged on 2019-05-12 07:43 BingoBoingo: I swear I remember him elaborating in a story about this point, but Lafond does the insane thing where when he makes enough stories to do a book, he frequently purges the text from his site because it has been booked,
BingoBoingo: Before I understood the awful pichi accents (accent clarity degrades rapidly with declining social position here) I answered all the bum requests with "Ya tengo" whether I have the item in question or not. Got the time "Ya tengo", Want Maracoña "Ya tengo", Una Moneda para comer algo "Ya tengo", etc. Don't stop scowl and eventually the pool of potential new bums runs out.
mp_en_viaje: the irony of it all being that i ask people for the time ALL THE GOD DAMNED TIME
BingoBoingo: http://jameslafond.com/article.php?id=10996 also close to what I remember, but not quite
BingoBoingo: I swear I remember him elaborating in a story about this point, but Lafond does the insane thing where when he makes enough stories to do a book, he frequently purges the text from his site because it has been booked, ☟︎
BingoBoingo: I've got some options, could swear I remember a better piece from lafond on the subject
mp_en_viaje: high resin, and some of the hoghest quality resin in the world. i don't think they can be swept manually. need a drezine.
