mod6: and if there is anything that's deemed "required", we'll be putting those things in. getting us to the baseline.
mod6: <+mircea_popescu> even if it's the void set, still step 0. << so this totally could be a void set. but we'll certainly look at what changes are in here post v0.5.3->6.3 just to ensure that we don't miss anything (http://cascadianhacker.com/blog/2014/10/20_a-summary-of-changes-to-bitcoin-since-0321.html)
mod6: once there, then start to schedule in the amputations.
mod6: get us to a point where we can feel good about just what we're starting with.
mod6: my philosophy on this project is: first, do no harm.
mod6: yeah, i think you're right that any place that actually gives a shit about the bitcoind they run, probably made their own changes immediately.
mod6: :(
mod6: we've dealt with it for 5 years, what's another 3-6 months?
mod6: then once we have our baseline... something that can be used, and we can feel pretty good about with not years worth of testing, then we start to implement these major changes. then we see the UI go away from core, the rpc commands, etc.
mod6: we add patches from stuff up to 6.3
mod6: see, im of the opinion that we don't cut out anything. first we add.
mod6: you have some great ideas about changes that need to be made. and I really do think we'll get to doing them. bitcoin will be better for it.
mod6: who knows what effects can be seen.... and sure, i could spend 3 months with gdb just trying to chase stuff down. this is going to be a methodical process of eradication.
mod6: and it's a great example. but it makes me nervous. cutting out stuff like that in something as poorly written as this is just ... frightning.
mod6: understood. i worry about these jokers.
mod6: <+mircea_popescu> prolly a better idea to keep things sane and incrementally improve ? << this is the way it must be done. even though slash and burn feels so damn good.
mod6: that's plausibly only 8 weeks out. and we'd better have something to run by then. i don't wanna be chasing crazy changes down when we could have just gotten something simple running first.
mod6: eh, yeah, these things are all great ideas. and necessary. but i think the best course of action is to get something up and working as a baseline with the most minimal changes possible so we have something to run when derpistan puts in the hardfork
mod6: and noone wants that
mod6: if do slash and burn first, we're gonna have unforseen issues
mod6: yeah, but personally, i wanna start simple. and then work our way up to major changes.
mod6: i think i just tried to put it out of my mind.
mod6: i forgot how obnoxious some of this code was.
mod6: int ret = CommandLineRPC(argc, argv); << lollertron
mod6: but.. we'll figure something out, yeah
mod6: <+mircea_popescu> asciilifeform mod6 actually, could it be made to work so as to simply spit specified streams as it runs ? << not 100% positive but it seems that some of the debug stuff almost does that when turned on fully.
mod6: yeah, it seems that way ascii
mod6: well, i guess she was blind or whatever, so lol
mod6: yeah, call it hellen keller
mod6: they're all rpc args it looks like
mod6: anyway, not that i'm gonna keep going that direction for now, just wanted to kinda poke around and see a bit.
mod6: so slashing out rpc coudln't have possibly been that easy. but it compiled and ran fine, it seems, just no way to get info without re-adding these options as command line args. that might take some time.
mod6: hehe forgot that the host i'm on is new. needed the libs that ben_vulpes listed in his script.
mod6: ok, built with patch, np: http://dpaste.com/080PFXN
mod6: now will 'clean' and apply patches
mod6: ok built.
mod6: im gonna give it a shot with some older libs
mod6: i think he bounced.
mod6: anyway, same error.
mod6: asciilifeform predicts 'no' << correct.
mod6: this is a good point. lemme see.
mod6: http://dpaste.com/1Q2VHWT
mod6: yeah, im havin the same problem.
mod6: yah, cool. :)
mod6: its an old fav. good times.

mod6 looks
mod6: oh! ok
mod6: so speaking of n00bs. can we add a link to the log.bitcoin-assets.com page that takes a person to the first day of logs availble?
mod6: to outline the foundations mission
mod6: Ok, so this is what we came up with for a Bitcoin Foundation charter: http://dpaste.com/0A9NGC9
mod6: someone could make a worthy ui to interact with the baseline b-a bitcoind. then qt is out of core, and lives in someother project.
mod6: <+mircea_popescu> "we are looking to hire a young cowhand, you will also be our napoleon" << haha
mod6: wb
mod6: COIN WARZ
mod6 gets ready to fire up mutt!
mod6: this hasn't been done for some time, and probably needs to come back.
mod6: asciilifeform: i like the idea of a cypherpunk-esq mailing list to propagate patches from a common release.
mod6: <+nubbins`> do the java thing and call it Bitcoin 6 << haha
mod6: hmm. ill see.
mod6: hmm. i can't get to any of 'em, maybe i r blocked
mod6: huh
mod6: lemme check.biz
mod6: mpex seems down for me.
mod6: ok. sounds good. we'll dig in. :)
mod6: we'll draft up something, probably have something for all to look at by end of tomorrow or friday? hope that's not too long.
mod6: mircea_popescu: ok thanks, good point.
mod6: <+ben_vulpes> i've never written a charter, are there good examples out there? << me either, but we can work on it. no sweat.
