asciilifeform has several colleagues who didn't finish school, they put the time to good use
n6: woudln't know never went to school asciilifeform dropped out in the 7th grade.
shinohai: Well that sux. I can't be of much help when it comes to gentoo tho :/
mircea_popescu: isn't that lsusb ?
mircea_popescu: i don't even fucking remember what lsub was
mircea_popescu: (hostile messages won't be awarded points) << lol how da fuck do you police that.
n6: mircea_popescu: didn't you teach some kids how to use gentoo with RagnarDanneskjol ?
mircea_popescu: "how do we do this, we don't have a lot of money to spend on it" "just pick a significant number, that's how mp always does it. people will think hey, it's metasyntactic!"
mircea_popescu: i srsly don't see a problem n6. relax an; enjoy.
n6: I didn't interact with my first friend using gpg auth so someoen else just stepped in and was able too..
mircea_popescu: n6 either i'm slow today or something's amiss. i don't get what exactly you think you did wrong from this story.
n6: I couldn't help him, thought he would do some reading on his own but all he wanted me to do was save posts for him to read.
n6: told him I wouldn't have anything to do with fiat only bitcoin and we would have to move out of the states to do it.
mircea_popescu: wywialm it's not an illegitimate approach. i can't evaluate how practically useful it'll be, but then again that's what you folks are in for right ?
wywialm: mircea_popescu, i didn't expect this, but i'm thankful
mircea_popescu: wywialm best of luck. there isn't anything glaringly obvious to say else.
mircea_popescu: if your future doesn't deliver it has a hole in it, sooner or later it'll infect and puss out. anyway.
mircea_popescu: "Thats like saying the dotcom bubble was a scam isn't it? You can certainly phrase it like that but is that really whats going on. An actual scam?"
phf: ;;later tell ben_vulpes in fact if i manage to fix whatever cs issue future instruction should be to do brew install -v eulora > eulora.log 2>&1, so you don't have to rerun it twice if something breaks
mircea_popescu: <mod6> Sure thing. Agree 100%, but since 'rotor' can run on any "sane" linux (to quote ascii), we don't have to marry ourselves to Gentoo << not clear there exist any sane linuxen ; not clear that if we don't marry to something there'll be anything left next year. that sorta thing.
mod6: It also couldn't hurt to describe exactly what you're trying to do in here.
shinohai: I haven't got it to run 100% for me outside of a basic x86_64 build. I am waiting to see a build log for arm systems, then I think I can run with the cross-compilation thing.
mod6: Sure thing. Agree 100%, but since 'rotor' can run on any "sane" linux (to quote ascii), we don't have to marry ourselves to Gentoo and thereby also provide steps to build Gentoo. As 'rotor' should work basically anywhere. Needs to really.
mod6: So now that we have 'rotor', most likly we won't need to have the gentoo guide. We'll see how it goes but in the future we'll probably just point people at the gentoo handbook if they want to run Gentoo.
ben_vulpes: nah, 'twasn't you
ben_vulpes: deterministic doesn't have much to do with what you're working on n6
mircea_popescu: well that doesn't exactly help because i assume refinement is then a lack of vulgarity ?
mats: so, while I enjoy the prose, I don't otherwise know what you mean by vulgarity
pete_dushenski: mats: y'know i hadn't noticed it, but looking at his ratings, it was immediately obvious (if ex-post)
pete_dushenski: cazalla: i dunno what to tell you dude. if you don't like it, you can always take a yellow taxi with jurov. no one's holding a gun to your head around here. if more than one 'lord' likes the 'proposal', then 'lordS will have fender flags on their motor coaches'
mats: but to be fair decimation is the only fella regularly engaging in conversation here I can think of that doesn't contribute to LA serenissima
pete_dushenski: gribble doesn't like cars
ben_vulpes: yes i would very much like to trade a rapidly depreciating asset for one that doesn't
ben_vulpes: haven't rolled like that since the suburban i drove as a younger boy
cazalla: pete_dushenski, A+ for effort but that doesn't make it good, if i wanted a 2 minute knock up andy warhol photoshop job i could do it myself

cazalla: although hers? who knows, tried the past 2 months and it didn't take yet
cazalla: mircea_popescu, doesn't affect my fertility last i checked :P
mircea_popescu: wasn't one that punched through and fell past the ship ?
ben_vulpes: as mp said one time "mothers care too much and fathers don't know wtf's in the box"
n6: I started this graph thing on os x and it couldn't do the job. then ben_vulpes told me to try AWS, but you can't just give someone a spaceship they have to earn it.
mircea_popescu: ben_vulpes don't poke TOO much
n6: I still don't understand, sorry.
phf_mobile: can't help it, the girl can't help it

But today I stepped on the ethernet cable, and broke the modem in such a way cables won't work. I have a Edimax EW-7811Un but no clue how to go about getting this working with just a base install. and no internet.

asciilifeform: there isn't much else useful in ol'clitler
cazalla: mircea_popescu, one good, lucky, weird angled shot or in other words the exception that proves the rule, this ain't hot for a college chick

mircea_popescu: well of fucking course it doesn't work
mircea_popescu: don't confuse things.
asciilifeform: and here is where we meet up with vlsi boojum: you can't do vlsi economically if there is room for six computers total. ☟︎
mircea_popescu: not so. average cost per kid over 1-18 is about 500k atm. that makes the stable cost quadrillions. computers don't cost that much.
mircea_popescu: this is all. it just says "you can't send everyone"
trinque: maybe so; the guy kinda diverged from the guide, but then that was because he didn't know what EFI vs BIOS was
cazalla: trinque, wasn't implying that, more that if i could do it then probably anyone else here can do the same
assbot: Logged on 07-08-2015 06:40:37; trinque: I think the lesson here is that at least with current materials, they can't
mircea_popescu: "I think that it's extraordinarily important that we in computer science keep fun in computing. When it started out, it was an awful lot of fun. Of course, the paying customers got shafted every now and then, and after a while we began to take their complaints seriously. We began to feel as if we really were responsible for the successful, error-free perfect use of these machines. I don't think we are. I think we're re

mircea_popescu: on the ethnic filter point, a) it was not actulaly the case historically (new york by ww1 was just about getting to the point of advancement) ; b) it'sjust the lazy man's approach to things. doesn't work, either.

asciilifeform: ask the folks in the alt-universe where vlsi didn't happen
nubbins`: When asked, hypothetically, how he would pay for complicated life-saving surgery for a loved one, Polk seemed uncertain. "That's a lot of vegetables, isn't it?" he said.
nubbins`: TBH i think stuff like VLSI is only kept going because everyone involved is afraid the machines won't start up again if they stop
asciilifeform: and 3) great student exercise, where the kids won't demand to hear why both 'elt' and 'nth' exist (perennial retardation example from cl, which was born in a 'no vendor left behind' multi-turdculturist compromise)
