ben_vulpes: "you don't understand. they. will. take. your. children."
ben_vulpes: "oh, they'll take your children away if you don't conform to us norms."
ben_vulpes: so my father managed a gentleman who'd moved from the soviet block many years ago. the man walks into my fathers office one day, asks for some privacy to talk about american things. asciilifeform: the principal difference between this and actual sys6 is that a) written in ansi, rather than k&r c b) ab initio, for x86 b) ab initio for multiple processors, which actually simplifies threading & locking

asciilifeform: i haven't tried to plant the thing on iron, as of yet. nor do i know whether the author has.

asciilifeform: 3) mighty slow, because the thing actually prods the disk every time you file
asciilifeform: 2) if you have 64-bit qemu because you're an old osdev junkie, qemu-system-x86_64 -smp 2 -m 512 -hda xv6.img -hdb fs.img instead of the makefile's runner.
asciilifeform: 1) you don't have to use the serial console. the thing includes basic text term and kbd handler.
asciilifeform: see also mircea_popescu's article on 'exam takers'
asciilifeform not a principled opponent of testatrons
ben_vulpes: asciilifeform: they have their place. i find it convenient to have tests when rewriting large swaths of a thing either i've written: with the behavior codified, i don't have to manually poke at the thing to ensure that it still behaves the way it did before i tore it apart and put it back together.
asciilifeform: but passes the author's testatron (included)
asciilifeform: remarkably slowly, even for an emulated thing

ben_vulpes: WRITE MOAR TESTS
mod6: shinohai: thanks for doing all that testing on V. looks like I might need another round yet before tomorrow.
mod6: ok everything passed. I'm glad I wrote all of those. makes regression testing on core functionality like this so much easier.
mod6: running automated tests...
mod6: ok, last place of 'each' removed -- only one more line of code required there.
mod6: anyway, will update later when I get a chance. thx!
mod6: mircea_popescu: yeah, perl v5.005 or whatever has been in use since 98, lot of systems have from that version forward. would be good to support older versions.
deedbot-: [BitBet Bets Bets] 4.00000000 BTC on 'No' - Bitcoin to top $600 before Jan 2016 - http://bitbet.us/bet/1216/bitcoin-to-top-600-before-jan-2016/#b55
mod6: i've got one more spot in the code to change out 'each'
mod6: it's only 2 more lines of code really. so it's not a bad solution, and this affords me not to have to require perl 5.12 or greater.
mod6: i've re-written the traversals of the map for ante & desc and my new changes passed the automated tests.
mod6: so apparently the 'each' keyword is pretty much to be avoided like the plague.

mircea_popescu: " there should be no instinct at all to defend such a jerk, and yet----- and yet that is precisely the instinct many people get." << check it out, usg wants monopoly on orcdom now. IT can defend the outcasts so they can terrorize the cattle, i'm not "allowed to" because hey, there can be only one and it can't be me, amirite ?
mircea_popescu: it's not that there should be no controversy THIS way. There should be, and really there is not, any controversy the other way. ~Some guys~ SHOULD tell a girl they'll rape her. If they don't, how are you to stand out ? And "girls" in the general must be convinced in their bones that either they put out with their choice or get collectively raped by everyone. This part seems to work okay, anyway.
mircea_popescu: "There should be no controversy: a guy should never tell a girl he's going to rape her, online or not, kidding or not." umm,... and whence doth that should come from ? what nonsense is this, anyway ?
asciilifeform also does this.

mircea_popescu: now I fucking need it too.
