mircea_popescu: btw, if anyone feels like making some banners to replace https://8ch.net/static/8chan%20banner.png go right ahead.
asciilifeform still not grasped what, precisely, was the appeal of '8chan'

asciilifeform: from my perch, looks like every other heathen pit
mircea_popescu: it's like the appeal of boxing. either you grew up with it or it's stupid
mircea_popescu: copypaste how does the gpg signature thing werk btw ?
cazalla: what size do the banners need to be
copypaste: 300x100 is the banner size.
copypaste: GPG signatures arne't open to the public yet, just me.
williamdunne: Who is responsible for w.b-a.link?
mircea_popescu: https://8ch.net/meta/res/74759.html#74760 << lawl.
mircea_popescu: copypaste ah ok. any plans to open them ?
mircea_popescu: cazalla 728x90 for qntra, 300x100 for /btc/
copypaste: Yes, but not immediate plans. When the system is finalized you would be able to upload a key, have it put in the server's keyring, then paste a signed message into the box. You would put the keyID in the email field and it would sign.
copypaste: That's how I sign. I just haven't implemented the "everyone can put a key" thing yet.
mircea_popescu: you can prolly steal the assbot/gribble code, depending what you run
mircea_popescu: iirc gribble runs in python.
copypaste: PHP
mircea_popescu: i dun recall there being anything prewritten for that.
copypaste: The system also would not handle concurrency well, due to the fact that it comes up with the ID by doing ls, then finding the biggest numbered text file in _g and adding one to it.
copypaste: So, those two problems need to be fixed before everyone can sign.
williamdunne: copypaste: I've done the everyone can put a key thing before, I can help you with that if you want..
copypaste: Sure, there's another problem though - we have 3 servers that run PHP, so I need to sync the keyring across them, hehe.
copypaste: I manually entered my pubkey into all three servers, but that's not possible for everyone signing...
williamdunne: Oh..
copypaste: Yeah, sorry. :(
mircea_popescu: how do you handle your concurrency then ?
williamdunne: The way I handled this was I had a separate server running with the keys
copypaste: Well that only affects singing. Since I'm the only one that can sign
copypaste: It's not a problem.
williamdunne: And then requests were sent between the webservers and that server for things like signing
copypaste: That's a better idea. I was thinking of just doing an NFS share.
copypaste: With the keyring on it.
copypaste: Fixing the archive is more urgent right now since it has a deadline.
copypaste: I'll let you know when keys for everyone are available though :)
mircea_popescu: aha.

trinque: as it stands my email program has to have logic about 'what if I didn't open an e-mail'
trinque: wouldn't it be nice to simply declare the structure of an e-mail, and know that anything acting upon anything which claims to be an e-mail is going to be of a given structure?

asciilifeform: (almost certainly not, i might add, per watt. plant it somewhere mains power is 'phree') ☟︎
jurov: really? how quickly ECL logic can do, say, one SHA step?
asciilifeform: jurov: ecl (emitter-coupled logic) is a supposedly-obsolete way to build logical circuits (on any particular semiconductor chemistry) where a transistor is kept near switching point at all times, gaining speed at the expense of economy
asciilifeform: it was used in certain '80s supercomputers.
jurov: yes, i know. even had it at school
jurov: pediwiki says "300 MHz flip-flop toggle rates".. and guess it would need flipflops if the SHA computaiton is pipelined
asciilifeform: my symbolics lisp mach., interestingly, has a board with a good number of ecl discretes. turned out, this was the framebuffer. it was the only way to crunch ~200MHz at the time
asciilifeform: jurov: check out a modern catalogue (e.g., 'digikey') - you can get ecl parts going into double-digit GHz
asciilifeform: (assembling these into a circuit with 'weakest link' still permitting these speeds, is 'an exercise for the alert reader') ☟︎
jurov: heh had same thought
asciilifeform: ecl miners probably live on the same planet as gallium arsenide, etc. miners.
asciilifeform: http://www.asic-world.com/digital/logic3.html << for readers
asciilifeform: while we're doing peculiar miners, one might also consider another lost technology, the 'integrated'... vacuum flask.
jurov: rly? last time someone dig out "vacuum" microelectronics, you said academic wankery
asciilifeform: because they needed a si fab
asciilifeform: the whole point, here, is to avoid the statal spittoon dragged in by the use of si microfabrication.
jurov: ah that. so, thinking about ECL, one basically needs to put together 2x80 identical circuits for two rouds of SHA1, and pipeline them, no?
asciilifeform: potentially, one could create a sequential circuit of arbitrary complexity using laser-cut metallic baffles in a long glass vacuum flask.
asciilifeform: on traditional principles of valve logic.
asciilifeform: jurov: sha2
asciilifeform: and when using exotic/handmade logic, you will probably take the opposite approach from a si designer - maximally 'un-unroll' the loops.
asciilifeform: keeping the number of parts at a minimum.
jurov: so you think about one SHA2 iteration feeding itself?
asciilifeform: aha, as on early fpga.
jurov: ;;calc 2000/128
gribble: 15.625
jurov: could have 15 MH/s if driven with 2GHz
asciilifeform: probably 'sheep's skin not worth the tanning' if tradeoff is taken to this extreme.
asciilifeform: http://www.junkbox.com/electronics/CompactronTubesIndex.shtml << re: mega-tubes.
asciilifeform: 'What GE did was combine multiple common tube types into "fat" tubes—as many as four in a single glass envelope, all heated from the same filament. The idea was to reduce the amount of power required to heat the tubes and the space they required on the circuit board, as well as the associated costs of multiple sockets. In a very crude way, GE was applying the concept of integrated circuits to tubes, and if solid-state technl
asciilifeform: ogy had not advanced as quickly as it did in the first half of the 1960s, the Compactron idea might have been developed further, with even more tubes in a single envelope...'
jurov: don't you need one cathode per every gate, roughly speaking?
jurov: http://www.radiomuseum.org/forum/logic_family_built_around_1j24b.html
adlai finds along the rabbit-hole walls yet another example of "jpeg-quality gif > $maxint words": http://pw2.netcom.com/~wa2ise/radios/aa5-1t.html
asciilifeform: jurov: if going to tubes, one ought to stop thinking in terms of gates and start considering how much computation can be carried out by one flying electron... ☟︎
