mircea_popescu: does that make any sense ?
mircea_popescu: so your thing here is to figure out who the fuck is the parent, why the fuck is it not cleaning up its dead kids, and possibly kill it too, and it's stupid father in turn until presumably you end up with the kernel which WILL clean them all up.
mircea_popescu: lled, whatever, at which point its parent, ie, whoever spawned it, waits on it and cleans it up. 4. until such a thing happens, the ~process table~ still lists it, even though it is no longer able to ~do~ anything. this is a "zombie", process existing in listings only, not yet cleaned up by its parent. (it can, unfortunately, block unmounting).
mircea_popescu: should show the parent. basically, the way this whole thing works is as follows : 1. linux is organized around "processes", which are a sort of agents let's say. they're listed in /proc/ ; 2. any process can spawn other processes, the whole menagerie's spawned by the kernel (which in systemd thing is also process 1, hence the whole http://btcbase.org/log/2018-10-19#1863880 thing ). 3. a process can close, or be terminated, ki ☝︎
mircea_popescu: hanbot cat /proc/4693/status says what ?
mircea_popescu: hanbot do you have a file open somewhere ?
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform btw, were you saying you can't find write-only sdcards ? ☟︎
mircea_popescu: hanbot anyway, the same effect can be obtained by simply umount-ing all the partitions.
mircea_popescu: come to think of it, prolly also requires root. are you not root ?
mircea_popescu: iirc only introduced recently-ish.
mircea_popescu: mount -V
mircea_popescu: possible you ran it previously (when it worked) on an unmount that supports -R ? whereas the one using now doesn't ?
mircea_popescu: hanbot -R is recursive unmount.
mircea_popescu: if volume is a concern, can limit it to so many bytes / time interval / ip. add command to your bot to whitelist ips by their being claimed by l2 people, then you can even invoice them.
mircea_popescu: minus the "Alipay and Wechat Pay are supported currently:" shockingly idiotic bs, of course.
mircea_popescu: btw, spyked lobbes either of you feel like implementing a http://btcbase.org/log/2019-03-04#1900358 thing ? ☝︎☟︎☟︎
mircea_popescu: 9
mircea_popescu: "il net e multo peggiorato" "ufa! de maniera verticale!" to pastiche sorrentino
mircea_popescu: certainly.
mircea_popescu: hey, i recall a time in the 90s irc was for dating. fulla exactly the kinda gal you'd like to meet, bash & fuck on 1st "date".
mircea_popescu: whatever, "Grupo de Usuarios de Linux de Costa Rica.
mircea_popescu: i got ~same impression.
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform http://p.bvulpes.com/pastes/gD0hD/?raw=true
mircea_popescu: the more patient sinophiles are invited to squeeze the rock for butter at their leisure, my interest's exhausted.
mircea_popescu: well, that linuxba thing turned out to be pretty retarded.
mircea_popescu: meanwhile in obscura, http://p.bvulpes.com/pastes/2CjUT/?raw=true
mircea_popescu: there's no math broken-er than the math completely the fuck undone.
mircea_popescu: I AM INSISTING YOU FUCKING DO IT AT ALL!
mircea_popescu: yes, of course. i'm not proposing you publish the damn thing in any particular scheme, or that your math comes out a particular way
mircea_popescu: if the tree is (evaluate object) (decide if buying object) (deal with the fallout of buying object) you can't possibly spend 300ms alftime on 1, 190s alftime on 2 and 168`000`000 s altfime on 3. it's just insane.
mircea_popescu: this is no way to go about things, balance the tree, let everything get a commensurate qty of brain cycles.
mircea_popescu: a more balanced distribution of your own brainpower to the trees of your own life can only benefit you. as it is, you're stuck now spending weeks of time to deal with the results of decisions that took minutes to take on the basis of information you "compiled" in half seconds, by sucking thumbs.
mircea_popescu: you can't go through life like this, astride a horse that takes you wherever it pleases, that you barely even know or ever talk to. wtf, it's your fucking head, it's a head not a horse!
mircea_popescu: rather than being surprised by "random" events one could've seen coming a mile's worth of weeks away, if they bothered to look ; and rather than being surprised by where the horse decides to go.
mircea_popescu: management ~is exactly this~.
mircea_popescu: so tehn spend however many 20 minute slices it takes to write these out, write out the time commitment you expect, sort them in order, and make yet another publishing plan!
mircea_popescu: holy shit, it'd have been faster to learn 100 items than 144!
mircea_popescu: it's like a kid who, in preference of learning 1 digit multiplication table, learned a tree of 12 principal excuses with 12 nodes each.
mircea_popescu: but currently you're much more adept at avoiding the learning of how to do that than at the doing it!
mircea_popescu: even 20minute timeslices can move it along, ~if~ you know how to manage your time and your thought process.
mircea_popescu: this is yet another red herring. it is evidently true one needs arbitrary long chunks for arbitrary long tasks, say "to prove m-r i need a weekend alone". but "ffa" IS NOT this. ffa is eminently aditive.
mircea_popescu: it's not even true that asciilifeform 's gear trove is "worthless". everything has a value.
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform i think that because http://btcbase.org/log/2019-03-04#1900416 ☝︎
mircea_popescu: it may well be that the $250 notional you made ain't worth the notional value of what you lost.
mircea_popescu: you gotta ADD ALL THE PLUSSES.
mircea_popescu: "the cost to buy this $160`000 item [which really can be had at $8`000 with some regularity, if one's not in a hurry] for $7`750 is $7`750 in cash + dropping the ballo on ffa + whatever else it is.
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform that was not my formula.
mircea_popescu: and as to b), you never to my fucking knowledge said the "hey honey, ima go see if i can find something to shoot at in the forest" part. it's never "hey, i plan to spend so much dough to realise this much unbooked profit on the basis of this pricetag and through this process"
mircea_popescu: it is still a deffective calculation, in that it only counts ~part~ of the cost, and compares to a ~dubious~ watermark.
mircea_popescu: the cost to own, the cost to use, these fucking figure into the total cost. what good is it you got something 50 or 500 or 5000 bucks cheaper than "the average" if the average wasn't even correctly calculated and as a bonus you lose your horses die in the fire started by the wife's funeral candles ?!
mircea_popescu: the man who drives 10 miles out of his way to buy a tank of gas a cent cheaper does the exact fucking thing, "oh, it was cheaper gas". no it fucking wasn't.
mircea_popescu: but you never bother to calculate the costs of opportunity! neither in time, nor in actual resources, nor in anything else!
mircea_popescu: as to a) : 1. you see an item for sale, for price X. 2. you don't even bother to calculate the expected-average-X, i suspect, but merely "intuit" it, without even a full second's thought. 3. you calculate X-imagined-avg-X thus obtaining a delta, which then motivates you to purchase, and in the process ALSO commits you.
mircea_popescu: the issue here is that a) you don't correctly account for costs, and that b) you don't correctly communicate.
mircea_popescu: the problem here isn't whether m-r is proven or not proven, to standard x or to standard y, now or later.
mircea_popescu: by all means.
mircea_popescu: nobody was a better writer for being late at his barber.
mircea_popescu: it's neither artistic nor geniusy nor liberty-ish nor anything else, to not pay rent on fucking time.
mircea_popescu: nobody is asking you to do impossible, or even difficult things. the problem's not the things. the problem's that you have developed, and evidently through insistent practice ensconced, a very self-defeating style of working.
mircea_popescu: then you can say "hey folks, we're done with the ffa that i know how to do, item is shelved for now, will pick it up if i wise up"
mircea_popescu: by leaving it for the end, where all the "i dunno how to do this yet" go.
mircea_popescu: this is your problem here, see. like any mental problem, it has its articulations. to you i have no doubt this nonsense makes sense, "i can't promise one a week, i got a job".
mircea_popescu: but you can make it as small as you wish!
mircea_popescu: or what is it, "lalala i can't hear it, dun count, not my problem" ?
mircea_popescu: are you aware, you had THIS EXACT PROBLEM a year ago to the week ?
mircea_popescu: as you stand right now, you're in a much worse position than nicoleci. she's a smart girl that got cheated out of an education, and consequently catching up. you're a smart boy that ~refuses~ education, and consequently spinning in place, in 2019 same problems as 2018.
mircea_popescu: again... did that make some sort of sense as an answer in your head, that was lost on its way to my head ? because i don't see it
mircea_popescu: there were 4 weeks in february. where are the 4 items ? ☟︎
mircea_popescu: that was the target. one item a week.
mircea_popescu: ~one a week~.
mircea_popescu: it never was your convincing me of the alt-wisdom of stupidity.
mircea_popescu: this is no waqy to live. the whole fucking POINT of the kindergarten was that you learn how to not be stupid in the way you're stupid.
mircea_popescu: what you do is what every other similar idiot did since the invention of empire : keep balooning your debts, "yes i'm late with instalment 1 but instalment 2 will be 3x as big! [and also, of course, late]"
mircea_popescu: you missed FOUR targets in february alone, and it's march 4th.
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform you are absolutely NOT on fucking target, quit deluding yourself.
mircea_popescu: whether they came back with shot bear or shot wounds, is not yet relevant.
mircea_popescu: there's no need to examine their bags to distinguish them.
mircea_popescu: looky here : the man who tells his wife "ima go see if i can find something to shoot at in the forest, we're fucking starving here" and the man who just disappears into the forest one day are readily distinguishable.
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform this is yet another red herring.
mircea_popescu: now how do you expect me to explain to your shareholders that "you know what ? the reason you can't predict in january what you'll read early march is that [???]" ?
mircea_popescu: it's not however mandatory. it's optional, it works ~exactly~ like AA meetings work.
mircea_popescu: there's a reason management exists, as a profession. that reason is in full display above : left to their own devices, people like you fuck themselves.
mircea_popescu: they're man-made, not environment-imposed.
mircea_popescu: that's nice, but you ~created your problems yourself~.
mircea_popescu: now you're in the position where you complain "no cash for pizarro" and "no time for ffa".
mircea_popescu: e distraction, alfie bought himself a toy.
mircea_popescu: but this entire "i work job!!!" thing's also a red herring. looky how your life flows : 1. your company needs some cash on a regular, predictable, and known in advance basis. 2. for convenience's sake i undertake a quarters' worth or so of this. 3. you turn around and buy, exactly like the people of walmart, a piece of hardware. on fucking impulse, there was ~no need for it~ and further, ~no time to use it~. but you wanted th
mircea_popescu: that's what we're discussing, obviously enough.
mircea_popescu: empire does not in any factual sense exist. man who works 70% of the time for idiots is === the remaining 30% of that man. ☟︎
mircea_popescu: wake up any day, and proceed to set to work on whichever of these seems that morning to be the most promising. then you go to sleep.
mircea_popescu: basically, i think i can authoritatively say, on the basis of having been trying to manage your efforts in the past however many years nsa existed, your approach to work is as follows : 1. there's an indistinct and unspecified ball of things you deduced you want on the basis of them being more or less connected to a core of goodness which, not necessarily very examinedly, seems to yield them as first degree relations. 2. you
mircea_popescu: when you're involved though, no such prediction can be made -- for the transparent enough by now reason that any random item catching your indisciplined fancy is equiprobable.
mircea_popescu: in a functional system, one can ~predict~ the content of february's report on the basis of january's report.
mircea_popescu: at issue is no kind of objective constraint. at issue is your very infantile approach to work, which could be best summarized as "oh! shiny!".
mircea_popescu: this is a red herring.
mircea_popescu: b) you published a raft of "x-ray kindergarten" something or the other.
mircea_popescu: the question is specific enough. you a) failed to publish any ffa matter during the MONTH of february. not during ~each individual week~, as the original notion went, after the last time we reviewed this, more or less around http://ossasepia.com/2018/02/06/its-only-words-and-assumptions-and-priorities-and-ouch/
mircea_popescu: did that make some sort of sense as an answer in your head, that was lost on its way to my head ? because i don't see it.
mircea_popescu: ...
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform so what am i putting in this month's report, " alf was gonna do ffa but went away to play with xrays instead" ?
