asciilifeform: it wasn't rubbish.
asciilifeform: one of the mega-lulz re: 'paleoconservatives' is that most of these folks (that i've had the fortune of reading) struggle with a mental bug - they yearn to roll back to some known-good state where various old-school religions were still strong, but don't personally subscribe to them
gabriel_laddel: people try codifying common sense to make it more palatable - doesn't work

gabriel_laddel: Youtube doesn't have grep, and I'm not going to troll through all these videos to find the one I'm thinking of. In any case, in one of them he states that "scientists have been replaced with baccarats" and that "MOOCs are not going anywhere"
ben_vulpes: <asciilifeform> i'd guess that many folks can't even think about this subject without their brain melting from rage << a good eighth of my time is spent talking smart young guys down out of a shartup-inspired rage attack
gabriel_laddel: if you watch thiels videos in particular you can see that he wants to fund interesting things but doesn't know how
mircea_popescu: people with money they don't know what to do with are the very definition of schmuckdom
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform i suspect the idea wasn't that, but to educate thiel so he's less of a schmuck.
asciilifeform: i'd guess that many folks can't even think about this subject without their brain melting from rage

mircea_popescu: the story of individual america is basically one line : "there's no difference between the rich man and the poor man who hasn't yet decided what to buy".
mircea_popescu: decimation there's a reason i don't live in "civilised" shitholes. i can taste their "feasts of engineering".

kyuupichan: Got rejected as no zeroconf but they were, so either reconsider or refund, but at the moment as you think zero was sent you won't be refunding anything right?
asciilifeform: it doesn't count if it's his
asciilifeform: essentially, according to 'neutral' folks in physics, al simply doesn't -get to- make the instrument

assbot: Logged on 27-09-2014 02:36:41; asciilifeform: 'If you're a defendant, you don't get to claim your fingerprints miraculously appeared at a crime scene... If you're a bookkeeper, you don't get to say money miraculously disappeared from your company...'
mircea_popescu: gabriel_laddel the problem isn't exactly of the equipment. the problem is that if you make new equipment, you don't know if you're measuring the new equipment vs the old equipment or an actual effect.
gabriel_laddel: so as to demonstrate exactly why it isn't as easy as "just measure the thing"
asciilifeform: except if the difference only becomes palpable a few $b and decades later, it does't really exist to the naked eye
asciilifeform: it isn't really a concept he finds digestible

mircea_popescu: and the proponent can't be doing or not doing "because of other people" (tm)
mircea_popescu: we're not discussing why some other blokes aren't testing it, we're discussing why the proponent isn't.
gabriel_laddel: but the grant funding people don't know this
gabriel_laddel: The Eot-wash group won't test this. And the string theorist in that stackoverflow question is more than happy to state that because a large construction of molecules falls at the speed we expect it to, it couldn't possibly happen on a small scale.
ben_vulpes: (people can't do "crosseye"?)
gabriel_laddel: What Al would like to test is pretty simple. Is gravity mirror-symmetric? If it is, then you can drop two stereoisomers in a vacuum, and they'll fall at the same rate. We don't know that this is the case, and the universe actually violates mirror-symmetry on many scales. Perhaps a violation will be observable.
asciilifeform: (as they typically aren't on a model)

asciilifeform: but al didn't want to pursue
mircea_popescu: think of it in terms of throwing bowling balls at a tree from outer space. you won't get within a mile. and if the first ball lands 735`331meters rom the tree, the next five won't land 735`331 meters from the next five threes.
asciilifeform: fact is, we haven't actually built computers yet
asciilifeform: 1) ocr doesn't work because 99.99% is still ludicrously low - human reader -who fully understands the text- still required 2) no ocr exists or is reasonably likely to ever exist for anything rich in notation 3) the machine-readability of most mathematical work is a fully ai-complete problem
gabriel_laddel: (for the record, I've not run the numbers on Schwartz's experiment yet, don't know for sure yet that it is valid, but can say that yes, everything he says is falsifiable and yes, everyone who say "he is a crank" etc. is a lying scumbag for not pointing out the exact sentence where he missteps. EG: http://physics.stackexchange.com/questions/7757/weak-equivalence-principle-tests in which a "string theorist" knowingly
assbot: Logged on 26-02-2015 21:54:23; asciilifeform: with regards to 0.5.3, i was expecting to see some technical discussion re: total rework of the blockchain sync mechanism and its idiocies, but this didn't happen

gabriel_laddel: I've nothing else to say. Your grasshopper article coupled with the rabbits exposition covers it all. Don't try and make things into that which they are not. And if you have a kid, care for /them as an individual/. Your life is over. Make way for the next generation.
mircea_popescu: http://log.bitcoin-assets.com/?date=01-03-2015#1036553 << you know, just because hunters wear animal skins doesn't mean they're furry animals. ☝︎
mircea_popescu pictures asciilifeform in bed with a woman he picked up earlier in metro. she goes "oh honey, that was SO FUCKING GREAT!" he goes "or maybe i wasn't even in!"

gabriel_laddel: in any case, I don't plan to be around for it
gabriel_laddel: I suspect we won't have to wait long.
gabriel_laddel: Vaguely related to the conversation above, I'm hoping for a war sometime soon - they are a good way to go about separating content from nonsense. Von N., Teller, etc. wouldn't have been able to work on the atomic bomb without the various powers that be helping out.
