asciilifeform: re: user interface << a 'clean ui' doesn't mean what people often think it means. e.g. a lathe has three knobs. what could be simpler. and yet.
decimation: heh. what they don't 'fairly' compare is the cost of transacting business in usd

justusranvier: True, there will always be murders. What can be ended is the myth that murder isn't evil just because somebody drapes a fancy title on themselves and cloaks their actions in euphamisms
justusranvier: Point of order: "the state" doesn't exist. People exist, buildings exist, guns exist, drones exist.
mircea_popescu: the state can't exist.
usg_press_machin: Thanks Mircea. I think crypto has a place to carve out individual privacy, but I don't think it necessarily follows that the only option is to view the relationship in terms of conflict. Reading now
mircea_popescu: to me it sounds kinda like "a movie can't be good if it doesn't have car chases and those anti-physical sparks bullets make in hollywood"
mircea_popescu: do you know who else didn't think ?
mircea_popescu: so you don't think.
usg_press_machin: mircea_popescu yes but I don't think paying taxes to the USG - no matter what the USG does - is Nuremberg material.
mircea_popescu: "The lack of transparent key management in PGP isn't unfixable. For those who don't trust Google or Yahoo, there are experimental systems like Keybase.io that attempt to tie keys to user identities."
mircea_popescu: as if you know, plaintext mail isn't end to end encrypted. why not ? i do it all the time.
decimation: bitcoin has already gone to the moon, some of the world hasn't figured that out yet
mircea_popescu: and no, people don't "shape it" in that sense.
decimation: bitcoin doesn't need anyone to have an opinion or thought about it in order to exist
mircea_popescu: i don't fit.
mircea_popescu: i mean i get it, some people can't. which is fine. but don't go around claiming impotence as a virtue.
mircea_popescu: bycicling isn;t a functon of people who can't ride bikes either. do you want more people to ride bykes ?
mircea_popescu: i don't care if they do.
mircea_popescu: you can kill yourself with paracetamol too, doesn't make paracetamol faulty.
mircea_popescu: <usg_press_machin> Surely it can't be that easy. << why not ?!
decimation: asciilifeform: re: tax-farming :: in Maryland there is such a thing as 'ground rent' - 'landlord' can sell land from under your house if you don't pay
usg_press_machin: Surely it can't be that easy.
mircea_popescu: usg_press_machin i don't like you enough to pm. and no, not really. you can comment on it once it's done.
mircea_popescu: !t m s.mpoe
mircea_popescu: anyway, small, worthless transactions like say a cab ride aren't too adequate for this sort of application because people can't be arsed to bother.
mircea_popescu: the reasons it's not well implemented are in no sense scientifical, but purely political, and so the solution isn't going to come from writing it up, but from a willingness to work with others already doing it.
justusranvier: I lost the password forum account, and don't have the email it was linked to any more. I may have an archived PGP key around somewhere that was linked to it though.
mircea_popescu: there's nothing wrong with seeing something you like and trying to understand how it works, or implement it. there is however something wrong with seeing something you like and imagining you invented it. that something is that in exchange for the stroking of vanity, it also isolates you from the exact people you don't really want to be isolated from, id est, those people who actually do the things you like.
assbot: !ticker <exchange> <ticker> (desc: returns current ticker values, supported: MPEX, HAVELOCK, BTCTCO) {short: !t}

mircea_popescu: of course they also made financial speculation liable in excess of sanity, which didn't work out for them on a macro scale, but the point remains : there's no good reason to exploit the concept of limited liability as a sort of exclusive monogamous relationship with the company.
mircea_popescu: what if limited liability weren't improperly tied to the notion of corporation ? like it worked in the soviet union : medical practice is unliable, and so cheap and affordable.
mircea_popescu: a fine example of how problematic this is : financial services, because they are companies, are also unliable. meanwhile, medical services, which aren't companies, are liable. the result ? rampant financial speculation exploiting the public resources of local authorities, and unaffordable healthcare.
mircea_popescu: we don't need that mechanism, nor does it have much value really. without it, limited liability survives just fine.
danielpbarron: he wants me to remove my rating on him; is it true that he didn't actually lose any BTC?

HeySteve: usagi did someone else up you? that would explain why you can't up others
cazalla: usagi, you said you didn't have much time but most people are doing other things at this time so you won't get many questions, may i suggest hanging around until some of those in the lordship show up
usagi: Wouldn't know.
usagi: But other than that, no, I don't really know about Perth.

usagi: Well like I said my time is limited, I don't really "do" education of this sort, but I've already mentioned J.E. Dew, look up "6000 Chinese Characters", it mentions literacy trends over several corpus studies like BLI and CYY done in China.
usagi: Cuz im just saying, if you aren't following the latest trends in linguistics, then of course you wouldn't know about the studies surrounding literacy in China.
usagi: I didn't say I was Japanese.

decimation: I guess things haven't changed too much, in the past the nobility would gather in country homes and drink themselves silly while shooting various animals
mircea_popescu: decimation that may also have a lot to do with you decoding difference as "white trash". just because the lassies drink themselves blind each weekend doesn't mean they ain't got class, in the uk sense of that term :D

decimation: 1500 BTC ain't going to go very far in Berlin or Amsterdam
justusranvier: Well "good" would be, "don't be a warlord". Since he'd already decided to adopt the "might makes right" standard of ethics by being in that profession, he would have been better off staying consistent.
mircea_popescu: no... they couldn't have.
mircea_popescu: justusranvier well the problem is... he couldn't have. this is like saying "usg could have fixed btc in 2010, saved a lot of 2014-16 headaches"
mircea_popescu: justusranvier nah. 1) it wasn't incest by the legal definition they were using ; 2) warlord is no cleric.
