mircea_popescu: "And one of the interesting things that we don’t talk about enough is the contrast between what’s happened in the United States and what’s happened in a lot of other developing countries, Europe in particular."
mircea_popescu: and he goes to a lot of effort to make it something we'd regret.
Namworld: Well yeah, sure. It annoys me that he has so much weight on Bitcoin.
mircea_popescu: Namworld okay, so you care about the protocol. the entire contention here is that this showsa to me who/what gavin was.
Namworld: I just can't be arsed to go around the world and strong-arming people not to be stupid.
Namworld: No, what I mean is I have no way to force people not to adopt stupid change. And unless stupid changes are made to the protocol, I'll stick around. I actually care about Bitcoin. But all I can do if changes are made is get my Bitcoins on the "new" fork cashed out and keep the ones that are on the original protocol fork.
mircea_popescu: there's no problem with you making a buck coming out of this.
mircea_popescu: i get that, it's fine, but don't expect me to be able to explain to you what the problem is
Namworld: Or they're smart enough to reject the new thing/fork and Gavin is displaced.
Namworld: Either people switch and refuse Bitcoin from the old protocol fork. I'll just sell my Bitcoins.
Namworld: How would keeping an old client prevent other people from switching according to Gavin's will? It doesn't.
mircea_popescu: put one and one together rather than being lazy and "it doesn't concern me".
mircea_popescu: think for a moment. he's already demonstrated the ability to create a hard fork, and the ability to pick the winning side IN SPITE of anything.
Namworld: I'll be concerned when it's messed with and refuse to upgrade at that point.
Namworld: Time spent making toys is time not spent destroying the current protocol.
mircea_popescu: but you're not required to be concerned obviously.
Namworld: As far as I'm concerned he's just making some pretty useless toy which honestly doesn't concern me.
Namworld: It doesn't change anything tho to Bitcoin, nor does it do much to improve it (offline wallet being better)
mircea_popescu: when a project is led by people who aim at its demise rather than its success.
mircea_popescu: the issue is that the people claiming to be the bitcoin developers are hostile to bitcoin
Namworld: You can already setup 2FA with the CURRENT bitcoind
ozbot: And Gavin moves on to the dark side. The Bitcoin project is officially hijacked pe Trilema - Un blog
Namworld: They can play as much as they want making little toys for bitcoind as far as I care.
Namworld: As long as they don't try touching the protocol.
Namworld: Well maybe the dev team should focus on more important things... but whatever.
benkay: oh, and a great way for the "dev team" to spend their time, too!
Namworld: All I mean is there's no fuss to be about it... it's just a tool, not a chain fork/change of protocol.
Namworld: You can already create a multisig wallet. This is just a tool proposal to communicate to an external server a 2FA token and receive the partial signature back. You can already set this up manually.
Namworld: It's just a tool. Like the message signature tool.
Namworld: Nothing that doesn't already exist with Bitcoin.
benkay: too complicated for these humans.
Namworld: Seems to be just a utility proposal.
Namworld: Well that's no hijack in any way. It doesn't change anything to the Bitcoin protocol.
Apocalyptic: on another topic, does someone have a link to the neat Deprived bond description ?
Apocalyptic: haven't thought of it thay way
Namworld: Adding an interface for easier use of the multisig already available on the Bitcoin protocol?
Namworld: Gavin's proposal doesn't change anything, it just adds an interface for making it easier to have a 2 factor setup with a second part of a private key on your own external server. Isn't it what he's proposing?
Namworld: That would be completly optional... either keep using as usual, or create a two key private key...
Apocalyptic: but that's retarded, you have to relay on some server to be able to spend anything
Apocalyptic: hum ok it's like splitting the privkey
Apocalyptic: guess i'll have to open that reddit link, *shrugs*
pankkake: and trusting a server operator… or even the server to be up when you need it…
pankkake: it wouldn't allow control of wallets, but it would allow blocking their usage
Apocalyptic: at the protocol level
Apocalyptic: i don't even see how he could introduce another factor than the privkey
Namworld: What the... how would that allow taking over control of people's wallets?
mircea_popescu: guy's much too polite about it.
ozbot: fellowtraveler comments on Gavin suggests two-factor protection of wallet files
pankkake: http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1j676d/gavin_suggests_twofactor_protection_of_wallet/cbbmp46 is right it would be insane to have 2-of-2
mircea_popescu: this'd be the point of no return for him. the bitcoin project is officially hijacked.
mircea_popescu: basically gavin just came up with a way to take over control of people's wallets.
ozbot: Gavin suggests two-factor protection of wallet files : Bitcoin
Namworld: Only to 1/5th of that
