mircea_popescu: bid/ask, last trade, min/max prices past 30 days and day/month volumes
kingofsports: man i understand options and the risks now i just gotta understand how to read the books like on mpex...i took one look at mpex and besides the standard buy and sell prices didnt know what the hell i was reading.
jurov: hi all, satoshi square bratislava made ~ 3 transactions in about 10 btc total
mircea_popescu: afaik the only book access is via mpexbot
kingofsports: thru this chat
kingofsports: is there a way to look at the options book for ASIC shares?

arandomer: Eh, wasn't too bad.
benkay: arandomer: he's around from time to time
kingofsports: say i offer futures of $120 for 10 BTC, and person fails to deliver but i have all their info and the contract.
kingofsports: now mircea what happens if the company fails to deliver is it legally actionable?
kingofsports: lol true
mircea_popescu: there's youtube videos of idiots losing lives in instants through chainsaws
mircea_popescu: it IS less risky than options. it's horribly risky nevertheless.
kingofsports: i hear people get absolutely killed sometimes in futures if they dont know what their doing, to me tho it sounds less risky then options tho
kingofsports: now i understand it better. now i see. companies make sure steady revenue no matter what thru these futures.
mircea_popescu: so if $100 right now for a ring i don't have to deliver for 16 months is worth 9900 for me, i'll offer that deal.
kingofsports: like for your example mirceau why would anyone offer u to sell the ring for $100 in 2 years when they could sell it for $10000 now?
mircea_popescu: you realise the payment is now, and the delivery later ?
kingofsports: cmon im trying to understand it. I read about it but i still dont see why anyone would take a future when they could sell for more TODAY. i watched TDameritrade all their videos and simulations. Options understood, forex ehh understood for most part but futures i dont see the one side why anyone would do it.
kingofsports: why would someone take my $120 in 30 days future when they could sell btc now for $130 is what im asking. whats the motivation / reason behind it.
kingofsports: cause if price stays the same they make money in 30 days
kingofsports: i understand how its profitable for the person offering the future below spot price.
kakobrekla: anyway sorry for the intrusion, carry on
kingofsports: what im saying is, how is it profitable to buy an offered future. Say bitcoins are selling for $130 today, and someone offers a 30 day future of $120. Why is there any demand for that future when someone could sell today for $130.
kakobrekla: gotta start educating early when the brain is young
mircea_popescu: kakobrekla he's 19 not 29. give the guy time.
mircea_popescu: there you go. that's your future.
kakobrekla: none of the above
mircea_popescu: hence the reading.
kingofsports: i cant see how THAT MANY people would buy futures cause they are in a stuck postion til that length of time goes by, but futures are huge.
kingofsports: i just dont see why it would be beneficial to BUY an offered future, if u could sell for more at todays price.
mircea_popescu: well i guess you got some reading to do.
kingofsports: ah i just dont understand how futures is similar to options, someone told me that.
mircea_popescu: kingofsports if the price in the future is below the spot and you don't need the item until the future then of course you buy the future
kingofsports: such as options, where in many cases u never hold the stock u just lose or instantly profit if u buy at a strike price
benkay: yes, by selling the contract.
kingofsports: is there any way of profiting from buying a futures contract if i dont have a position in that stock?
kingofsports: hey guys question regarding futures - why do people that are not hedging a postion they have buy futures? Generally future prices are below the today price of a stock or commodity. Why not just sell at todays price instead of 30 days from now if you arent trying to hedge something?

Namworld: Yes. Payable now. In ten years you'll be repaid 500 millions with 1 BTC because in another 10 years, that's what they'll be worth.
pankkake: will you hire Xzibit to do some consulting for you?
Namworld: So by making business for business making businesses, we'd be pretty much referring businesses to a business generating business for said business we referred?
Namworld: Anyone realize a business making business would be somehow referring clients to a business or advertising.
kakobrekla: Namworld that is already taken
pankkake: actually I have the best first word, just need a second one
Namworld: Hey gecko_x2, I'm IPOing VirtualActiveCryptoCoin, want to buy in? We're in the business of making business for business making businesses.
pankkake: shit! I need to think of a new name then
gecko_x2: no pankkake, forgot about that
kakobrekla: has the domain and logo and all
kakobrekla: but but im working on virtual crypto active coin is gonna be the greatest company
gecko_x2: i will not be subjected to names that make me sound like a fucking ape
gecko_x2: now the next ipo that will have 'coin', 'active', 'virtual' or 'crypto' in it's name i will NOT buy
gecko_x2: i think that's the word i was looking for
gecko_x2: something like that :p
gecko_x2: 30k shares?.. i imagined ppl traded in batches of those
Rulother: It's some guy trying to off 30k shares
gecko_x2: sell it to hell
gecko_x2: yeah sell that crap
mircea_popescu: http://agonistica.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Sophie.jpeg << what's this ?
mircea_popescu: once a bet closes of due time it doesn't resolve until the resolution date.
Anduck: but ain't the 5 deliveries already confirmed
mircea_popescu: not until the 1st.
Anduck: isn't that bitfury bet ready for resolution?
kakobrekla: 9 bets are waiting resolution but 0 of them are ripe for it
kakobrekla: i know why it does that
mircea_popescu: no idea why it does that, buit the bet itself is still "Betting closed. Pending resolution." and "Resolution:
gecko_x2: don't want to be responsible for a global thermonuclear war and destroying mankind..
Anduck: btw mircea_popescu why have the "pending resolution" in the footer bar changed from "1/9" to "0/9"
mircea_popescu: Anduck he just made the mistake of saying he's sick of all the bet discussion already.
gecko_x2: k forget i ever described that just now
mircea_popescu: i'm sorry r, it's just too funny!
mircea_popescu: Rulother is the designated news agent for the bet
Anduck: i think there are now 5 confirmed deliveries
Anduck: mircea_popescu: anything new about the bitfury bet?
gecko_x2: ofcourse the blockchain itself would prevent any tampering of the data during the 5 years
gecko_x2: anyway, something like that is what i've been thinking off
gecko_x2: and revealing the secret.
gecko_x2: creating the master key
gecko_x2: the open source software they use, like bitcoin wallet, can be set to automatically release the coins after 5 years
gecko_x2: anyone can buy them
gecko_x2: now the coins are released for trading globally
gecko_x2: those coins are used to create a master key, derived from the hashes of those specific coins
gecko_x2: so i purchase the amount of h, m and s coins so it adds up to 5 years
gecko_x2: so now say for ex i want to hide a secret message for the world, to be revealed after 5 years
gecko_x2: and limited, so for ex there can exist only so many second coins as there are seconds in 500 years
gecko_x2: let's set the system to support for ex 500 years into the future
gecko_x2: that aspects would give coins their value and some fierce speculation would ensue too :)
gecko_x2: holders of the coins will all be the first to get to see the hidden message, provided the message is intended for public view
gecko_x2: holders of the coins, or 75% of them distributed globally all with personal incentives, would refrain from releasing the coins too early because they would loose all value
mircea_popescu: gecko_x2 why can't someone just look at their datafield on the network ?
gecko_x2: the decryption of the hidden data would need something like 75% of the specific coins
gecko_x2: the mechanism for preventing early leaks of the encryption key would be based on millions of parts of the master key encoded in the data field of these timecoins
thestringpuller: mircea_popescu: did that work?
ThickAsThieves: back to the future!
gecko_x2: which you could buy and use for locking information until a specific time in the future
gecko_x2: i propose the creation of timecoins
thestringpuller: 17:10 <thestringpuller> where do I type that in
