dub: its like marveling at how we click a mouse and porn appears, 20 years ago this was novel
pankkake: a lot of the arguments used 20 years ago were debunked and are no longer used, so…
mircea_popescu: i suspect it's just "thinking is hard and why bother" rather than "snarky is cool".
TomServo: There seemed to be potential for interesting discussion, but evidently being snarky is way cooler.
Diablo-D3: mircea_popescu: the wizard of oz called, he wants his strawman back
Diablo-D3: dub: mircea_popescu is a troll
mircea_popescu: which is exactly the problem with "washing" data, such as trying to extract temperature records from soil samples.
mircea_popescu: wehen you say things like "if x bombs go off at the samer time" you're displaying exactly the misunderstanding of sampling in question : nobody guarantgees you that second is going to be exactly the second when the bombs go off.
mircea_popescu: lewicki it's a sampling problem. the same problem you eschewed earlier, as i was about to ask you if you know enough math to model the average concentration of gas A in the top tenth of a recipient holding a mixture of A and B where A is 10x as heavy as B.
dub: lewicki: I thought they are pointing to a warmer than average day 150 years ago as being proof postiive oslt
lewicki: Although I don't disagree, saying nanoseconds don't matter is a little obtuse. If 10,000 nuclear bombs went off all at once there would be problems.
mircea_popescu: what "we" and what 10s of millenia data is that ?!
pankkake: sure - but how would that support AGW?
dub: don't we have 10's of millenia worth of data to look at?
pankkake: though it was somewhat toned down after real scientists looked after it
mircea_popescu: guess what ?! CFC became very bad a thing just as patent on them was expiring.
pankkake: but it's an important part of the global warming theory
mircea_popescu: since i'm reading up on this : "In 1928 they improved the synthesis of CFCs and demonstrated their usefulness for such a purpose and their stability and nontoxicity. Kettering patented a refrigerating apparatus to use the gas"
dub: 150 years is a nanosecond in teh context
TomServo: And what's the point of excusing yourself from the conversation.. only to randomly interject?
TomServo: dub: Temperature data is irrelevant..how?
mircea_popescu: so people all over the world could trade their and their friends' carbon with each other.
mircea_popescu: maybe they could make a ripple based carbon thingee.
Neil: The sheeple are paying over the odds for XRP again.
mircea_popescu: nope. that'd be the strawmaning part of the entire thing i glossed over, but i guess you can add it to appeal to authority and social proofing.
mircea_popescu: hence the situation is not equivalent.
mircea_popescu: dub recall the 50 / 150 year problem ? TomServo picked up on it. you failed to do so.
mircea_popescu: lewicki if you're not working with molecular sciences with me you can go read whatever you wish wherever you wish to read it.
lewicki: No, I am not working through molecular sciences with you. Someone has to have published your viewpoint. cite your source
mircea_popescu: you construct appeals to authority and attempts at social proof. i shrug and point at numbers.
mircea_popescu: no dub, the situation is not equivalent.
dub: this is why its a silly discussion, we're applying the cargo cult thing to each other, its like religion
mircea_popescu: lewicki well let's start with something basic. what's the atomic mass of a cpc molecule ? (any one, at your choice)
lewicki: I consider it more than you
mircea_popescu: lewicki i don't consider the epa an authority in any field.
lewicki: The relationship between volcanic eruptions and ozone depletion is one of the most misunderstood in the realm of ozone science. Scientists seriously considered the impacts these awesome natural events might have on the ozone layer. They concluded, however, that ODS like CFCs are the real source of stratospheric chlorine, and thus ozone depletion.
ozbot: Myth: Volcanoes and the Oceans are Causing Ozone Depletion | Science | Ozone Layer Protection | US E
mircea_popescu: its contents broadly matches my own memory of the entire debacle.
mircea_popescu: the text off http://esr.ibiblio.org/?p=3974&cpage=1#comment-343643
TomServo: Interesting, where's that from?
mircea_popescu: same thing being done with lighbulbs currently, god forbid poor africans end up with homebrew industry and do the whole azn thing.
mircea_popescu: nevertheless, it got 1. everyone to buy a new set of fridges and acs, narrowly avoiding a depression and 2) rube countries that were just edging itno the tehcnology to compete were knocked back off the block.
mircea_popescu: and dense that little, if any, ever made it into the upper atmosphere. In fact, chlorides from wind-driven salt spray are a far larger constituent of atmospheric chlorine than CFCs ever were. Also, over the US where much of the CFCs were being released the amount of UV reaching the ground was decreasing during the same period (as the “ozone hole” was being fear-mongered).
mircea_popescu: The “ozone hole” is a naturally occurring result of atmospheric dynamics over Antarctica. Mainly the result of lack of sunlight in winter (remember ozone is made from O2 by UV light). The reason it was worse and has gotten smaller is that the scare was during the eruption of an antarctic volcano that was blasting enormous amounts of chlorine into the upper atmosphere. CFCs had nothing to do with it, being so stable
mircea_popescu: since it was mentioned, in case kids at home are using this to supplant their government-funded-therefore-absent education :
mircea_popescu: course i suspect it's a frenchie thing.
mircea_popescu: no, her nose actually is that sexy.
pankkake: a real nose can't be that sexy
pankkake: maybe the lightning
pankkake: her avatar looks like a 3D rendering to me
topace: but the symbol itself would still just be the SYMBOL
jurov: he even thought she stole the face :)
topace: as a "display" version of the symbol
mircea_popescu: use dots rather than lines anyway, and postfix rather than prefix
topace: (we keep issuer separate from the symbol itself on our side)
topace: but realized that would screw up historical data on assbot
topace: was going to add the issuer field to the symbol
topace: !ticker h TAT-XBOND
topace: !ticker h tat-xbond
VanCleef: just want all the jews dead
jurov: VanCleef: do the research. she has a blog under her true name
mircea_popescu: VanCleef you'll have to ask her
mircea_popescu: i don't recall any tenured professor being canned for not being competent. apparently the only way to get offed is fucking a student or something.
mircea_popescu: "As soon as AGW mutated to Anthropogenic Climate Change the whole show should have been laughed off the stage and all the players terminated (tenured or not)." < now this is the case.
VanCleef: is mp-pr jewish? cause i would like to bang that jewish ass
mircea_popescu: "No self-respecting scientist would ever utter a phrase like “the science is settled” or try to demonize dissenters." << this is kinda lulzy, seeing how i seem to recall 1900s physics being "A settled field"
pankkake: it doesn't need to be a conspiracy (see cargo cult science: not a conspiracy)
dub: worked for the NSA all these years I guess
mircea_popescu: dub no, they're unrelated. the science is wrong ; there is unscientific interest to make it stick anyway.
dub: because if science is wrong because the carbon market du jour is a scam..
pankkake: I know they can't eat half of the food existing
VanCleef: fucked the jew out of her
VanCleef: sick of this old world
VanCleef: as long as we get rid of the jews life will be good again
dub: pankkake: do 'things stink' because science or because our captains of politics and industry have found another 'free market' to toy with
mircea_popescu: hitler can not be possibly far behind, i've yet to see worhtless shits with delusions of grandeur simply bowing down into the dirt without a fight.
mircea_popescu: VanCleef a generation of kids that grew up being told they're special at home, at school and on tv moves on to be told it's "exceptional" by the politicians.
mircea_popescu: dub here, have feynman saying substantially the same stuff http://www.lhup.edu/~DSIMANEK/cargocul.htm
pankkake: global warming: "here is what I found out, can't tell you how, you're a bad person if you disagree"
mircea_popescu: If you don’t have a generative account of why your formulas and coupling constants look the way they do (a generative account which itself makes falsifiable predictions), you’re not doing science – you’re doing numerology.
pankkake: I don't have much of an opinion myself on the subject, but I can see when things stink
mircea_popescu: dub o the cathedral/bazaar dude, i remember.
mircea_popescu: pankkake inasmuch as that is emphatically not science.
pankkake: it's just the base of the scientific process
pankkake: anyone should be bugged by "Refusal to make primary data sets available for inspection.", regardless of opinion on global warming
mircea_popescu: dub your objection just was that some random dork doesnt LOOK like a scientist ?
dub: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e2/Eric_S_Raymond_portrait.jpg science all over tat face
kakobrekla: the fn all that jazz
kakobrekla: you see how useful that is pankkake!
mircea_popescu: anyway, i quoted the paragraph on its own merits, irrespective of author.
mircea_popescu: i have no idea, i don't noprmally follow the nonsense.
kakobrekla: global warming is the reason i never got a grade in agrometeorology
mircea_popescu: hm. is this some recognised party in the entire dispute ?
dub: the hillbilly pankkake linked to
mircea_popescu: which is why i even bother pointing out the obvious re "global warming".
mircea_popescu: the thing is this : stupidity should be dispersed. when stupidity concentrates, intelligent people feel the vauge cramp of "we shoulsd maybe try help these idiots ?"
dub: clearly the test for reality = 'average joe is blogging about it'
mircea_popescu: something new to laugh at.
mircea_popescu: and move on to aids epidemic or the nigger violence gene or w/e
mircea_popescu: well by that rationale the best solution to this entire global warming junk science rthing would be getting the media to stfu about it already
