topace: nubbins`: probably after the first block, but i'll confirm that for you
mircea_popescu: o, you can't trade it atm ?
nubbins`: guessing after the whole thing
pascal2571: I'm wondering, when will the trading on HIF begin? after the first IPO block or once the whole IPO finishes?
pascal2571: anyone interested in a bet that havelock will close down after collecting the funds of the IPO?
nubbins`: anyway, if you could sell GPUs that have been burned out from mining for a reasonable price, you wouldn't see any of them mining altcoins
asciilifeform: i'll toss this in for anyone who didn't get a chance to laugh at it last time: picture an altcoin where the workfunction is a blank field in the protocol.
nubbins`: well, being used to something and enjoying it aren't always the same thing
mircea_popescu: she ENJOYS paying the bill.
nubbins`: mircea_popescu: well, mom's used to paying the bill by this point, right?
mircea_popescu: nubbins` you got something there. gotta burn that electricity!
pankkake: by altcoin I meant bitcoin fork with meaningless tweaks
mircea_popescu: pankkake an altcoin would work well if it satisfied 3 conditions : 1. very respectable core dev team ; 2. very clear even if minor improvements over bitcoin ; 3. lattice-based or otherwise complex algo not easy to asic.
asciilifeform: an alt could conceivably provide added value, in the form of resistance to well-funded jokers baking silicon at economies of scale.
nubbins`: pankkake: i thought altcoins worked because there's no second-hand market for fried GPUs and you can't very well just let them sit around unused
asciilifeform: pankkake: the basic idea of altcoin isn't stupid; only the idea of 'btc with serial num filed off' is.
pankkake: asciilifeform: I think no one would buy this coin, so no economic incentive. altcoins work because 15 year old gamers can mine them in their moms basements
nubbins`: he's not thinking of closing up shop, is he? ;D
nubbins`: it sounds like a major uphill battle to increase trade volume
mircea_popescu: nubbins` doing it on one coin didn't work out for burnside too well.
nubbins`: i'd say the average per-person trade volume decreases steadily as the value of btc rises
topace: ThickAsThieves: yes definitely need new money. but not the volume estimate equivalent
asciilifeform: mircea_popescu: i've no incentive to do this, but the folks presently stoking their furnaces with old fpgas - do.
nubbins`: just like all the notes you need for any bob dylan song are all on a single guitar string
topace: you could do 180,000 volume on just a few thousand coins in a month
topace: 180,000 isnt _new coins_ coming in, its trading volume
mircea_popescu: quoth very frustrated bitbet mod : "i will not be the least bit surprised if i find the motherfucking penis length and girth of all players in this pile of non-stats befoar i find which freaking games they won."
asciilifeform: e.g. turingcoin
asciilifeform: trick is to devise an alt where the ideal miner is actually a full fpga.
nubbins`: it's not like these coins are out there sitting around waiting for a bad investment opportunity
ThickAsThieves: topace we know what youre saying, but there remains a gap
nubbins`: well, i don't think 8x volume is gonna come out of the woodwork just because there's a glut of questionable funds tossed into the sidebar
mircea_popescu: topace you're talking as if funds are chinese food.
mircea_popescu: asciilifeform they suck up a lot of electricity, and the altcoins have a pretty soiled rep.
topace: all im saying is that, 180,000 volume i dont think is out of the ballpark, if we're currently doing 24000 volume with stagnant funds and having put all new listings on hold for 2+ months.
asciilifeform: and raked in the cash
asciilifeform: re: the folks sitting on heaps of obsolete fpga: why hasn't even one started an altcoin with a diddled workfunction
ThickAsThieves: you cant have tons of new investor coins, without tons of new uptake
ThickAsThieves: so your volume isnt likely to increase 8x in the face of deflation
mircea_popescu: by next year 1% is quite on the table.
topace: i agree, we'll need to see a large influx of new investors
nubbins`: whether the market can handle it is, in fact, the same story
ThickAsThieves: where do all the new coins come from
topace: but there's demand out there for the listings
mircea_popescu: you're looking at the wrong end basically.
topace: whether the MARKET can handle that is another story
topace: 50+ funds are in the pipeline
topace: and thats with the current, stagnant funds
ThickAsThieves: this would require oceans of new coins to be poured into upcoming offerings
ThickAsThieves: youre talking about a major increase in the amount of coins people are investing and trading in this market
jcpham: has ukyo flwon the coup
mircea_popescu: i didn't think it was a profit estimate, no 0.0
topace: thats tradinv volume estiamte
mircea_popescu: not that it makes any diff. 180k isn't happening in 2014. i'd rather believe $1mn bitcoins.
topace: pascal2571 is talking HIF
nubbins`: not what HIF is up to ;)
nubbins`: yes, we're discussing how HMF lost 1200 BTC but gained a 3 TH/s farm
mircea_popescu: even now 90%+ of the coinbase is hauled up in matresses.
topace: with the havelock exchange
mircea_popescu: that's the funniest thing i heard all day, by 2014 volumes in 10s of btcs will be something to write home about
topace: dont confuse the mining fund
topace: i think that 12 is wrong, it should be 2014
topace: pascal2571: thats in the HIF prospectus? i think thats the estimation for 2014
nubbins`: topace: 1600 BTC and 0 TH/s < 400 BTC and 3 TH/s?
jcpham: wow it does generate that much
pascal2571: whats that 12 supposed to mean?
mircea_popescu: so what's the resale value of 3th atm ?
jcpham: no this is fine
jcpham: i'm going to take that as a no for now so i can do what i need to do
mircea_popescu: mostly to mess with you.
topace: not lost, spent growing the fund (And paying dividends)
jcpham: I'm trying to make some decisions
topace: nubbins`: the 20btc was based on resale value/exchange rate at the time
jcpham: i need to know now
jcpham: am i going to get that 30 btc rota pay next month
mircea_popescu: jcpham what, you're thje one miner hitting the green ?
nubbins`: well yes, hence my assertation that HMF can't be making money
topace: we've been rather busy the past few months
topace: q3 is being worked on and should be up by the end of the week
mircea_popescu: course that's mostly since august or so.
mircea_popescu: with the diff going the way it's been, any miner out there has been bleeding money.
nubbins`: topace: i dunno, maybe i'm looking at this wrong, but i just see a fund steadily hemorrhaging money
mircea_popescu: there isn't much of a 2ndary market gouing or is there ?
topace: the computers/gpu's were essentially depreciated to 0
topace: or, for most of the fpga's trade-in value
Rawted: yeah, i hear you. been fighting this battle with them for months
nubbins`: topace: for mining equipment listed under assets, does the value for each quarter correspond to the resale value, purchase price, or..?
mircea_popescu: well the price has been moving so...
Rawted: anyone need a btc-e code? looking for paypal, and for some reason im not receiving the withdraw notices from btc-e and my ticket has been unanswered for 11 days.

topace: available to the public
topace: nubbins`: its all in the financial statements
nubbins`: but i'd be more interested in the BTC-denominated revenue and initial investment than the fiat equivalents
nubbins`: now i'm just teasing
nubbins`: how about for the investors? ;)
topace: but the pre-order investors existed so the fund didnt have to spend bitcoins until mining equipment arrived
mircea_popescu: well then.
topace: would the pre-order investors been better off buying bitcoins instead of buying pre-orders for the mining fund? definitely.
mircea_popescu: this fiat approach is tricky.
topace: considering the mining fund started with an initial investment of less than $10,000 in fiat, and is now at 3TH with no further outside investment, i think its doing pretty well
