a long shot. Like I said, KnC (which are the most efficent miners as of now) must sell hardware for $200 million until FEbruary 2014 to maintain 10% network growth. They're not even close to that.

a monent ago, you argued we'd have 20nm. Of course they, or someone, will succeed; they have to, otherwise Bitcoin mining is dead.
furuknap: The cost to go from 28nm to 20nm is very high and someone needs to risk
a huge amount of money to possibly succeed in reaping
a 1:4 ratio on investment. I don't think you'll find many investors willing to risk that.

cads: not sure why AMD has been an underdog for so long - the situation's been similar between them and intel, with intel being more popular despite AMD offering, in my opinion,

a simple search I don't find any companies that offer AMD GPU clusters, which stinks.
cads: I know for certain things like engineering simulations, consultants can provide huge markups on their work (which consists of, say,
a Finite Element Analysis of
a product), and it makes great sense to run in
a High Performance Computing cloud.

a Nvidia at 1/10th of the cost it would be to run the AMD equivalent at home =P
cads: running in the cloud, you have to pay all of that, amortized by the service provider, and you also have to pay
a profit for the provider

a feeling that people running GPUs like mad might actually save time and perhaps even cash by running in the cloud

a damn huge 6990 in my underpowered PC (with 300W power suply). PC would self shutdown.

a short part of
a public address takes so many.
Namworld: There's
a reason why it's considered hard/impossible to have
a full collision while generating
a private key for an existing full Bitcoin address.

a mistake -- multiply that number by 56.
cads: rather, it would take around that time for it to get
a 50% chance of success

a vanity address is easy anyway...

a good practice - I do that for passwords where having
a longer password beats doing
a typo or transcription error
cads: if random keys were engineered so that whitespaces and symbols appeared less frequently, that would reduce security of keys of
a given length, but that might not be
a bad solution.
cads: If they did, vanity addresses could be
a lot nicer in the front end. But then all addresses would look
a lot uglier everywhere else.
cads: it's
a damn shame that public keys can't include punctuation or whitespace!
cads: If Bob has clients that will actually trust him with their private keys, he can _also_ test each P(B) with an "interesting prefixes" algorithm, and build up
a database of keys that he can sell to customers at
a lower price than his fully secure keys.
