mircea_popescu: jborkl it's a joke.
jborkl: mircea_popescu> jborkl no, that's someone else phishing as them. ? who is that? I had someone email me from a service content runner, but I can write my own shitty stories full of typos
assbot: Logged on 30-09-2013 19:34:06; zhenhua_wang: mircea_popescu: you are simple minded. sorry but your are a psychopathic

mircea_popescu: they're fucking quotes. the point here being that i comfortably define myself in the terms of the would-be insults various folk tried to tack on over the years. the years of me being and their coming and going. whereas you're stuck aspirationally trying to add labels to yourself. it's a fundamental difference at work.
pete_dushenski: "Korean bitcoin exchange Korbit has raised $3 million in Series A funding led by SoftBank Ventures Korea and Pantera Capital, with participation from BAM Ventures, and returning investors Bitcoin Opportunity Corp., Tim Draper, Pietro Dova, and Strong Ventures."
gribble: Kamuela, you need to be defined in the WoT in order to accomplish something (eregister <nick> <keyid>) -- Register your GPG identity, associating GPG key <keyid> with <nick>. <keyid> is a 16 digit key id, with or without the '0x' prefix. BingoBoingo: jborkl: Or a more unique cat
jborkl: oh and the Orangecat post did very poor, so maybe I needed a picture of a funny cat
Kamuela: though i suppose no one agreed this was a debate. you're just talking
Kamuela: bring up a character assessment based on your perception
Kamuela: and mine may not be foregoing seeking a project's funding by getting into a pseudo-intellectual marxist debate
mircea_popescu: X-Rob im not going to bother with a coupla cents, just make sure the thing stays online.
Kamuela: you're just a little bit of a marxist... that's cool... i mean, i don't prefer it, but you are welcome to your own opinion
Kamuela: sorry, a 0-value activity
Kamuela: no, this is like ensuring a house doesn't fall down by having blueprints drawn up before you put the pieces together
Kamuela: and yet having the build done by a team that's better and uses time more effectively than i can
Kamuela: mircea_popescu: how is that a strawman?
Kamuela: so if a task requires more than yourself, are you actually saying that hiring someone is being some kind of lazy ass
mircea_popescu: as far as plumbing is concerned, i'm a negligible entity.
Kamuela: or you live a meaningless life
mircea_popescu: okay. so you know what an office manger is. sorta like a glorified receptionist, hires the cleanning crew, takes a weekly salary.
mircea_popescu: you ever been a manager irl ?
Kamuela: in this project, and that's not some kind of a euphemism
Kamuela: i'm a manager
Kamuela: you act like i'm just trying to take something to a patent office
mircea_popescu: none of this is to say you personally are a bad guy or anything.
Kamuela: so... because i want to organize a bunch of people who don't know each other, because i interview potential customers, because i will continue to direct operations of both the MVP and later pivots, I am contributing "nothing?"
mircea_popescu: much like you'd have starved cca 1920 trying to be a buggy manufacturer.
Kamuela: it's a rational choice between employment and entrepreneurship
nubbins`: TheNewDeal: about a week-ish to ship
mircea_popescu: and that means the only way you'll be able to give them a worse deal is for as long as this elephant in the room stays secret.
mircea_popescu: what i'm trying to impart to you is that this "take capital from idiots of type A and labour from idiots of type B" that silicon valley was built upon is dead in the water.
Kamuela: i don't make money on a crowdfund, this is completely development and marketing runway
Kamuela: CEO's contribute vision, investor and customer relations, executive decisions, accountability, etc. could all of these things be "in-sourced," sure, and they are in a lot of cases
mircea_popescu: but anyway : specialisation is not a good thing just for the mere fact that it's specialisation.
Kamuela: Apple would have been a better company without steve jobs
mircea_popescu: this being a recurring discussion these days it seems.
Kamuela: you're asking for a CEO
mircea_popescu: need a better coder, which simply means ~actual~ one.
mircea_popescu: well then fuck him, he can go die in a fire.
Kamuela: mircea_popescu: the coder doesn't want to do that. the coder wants to run a development shop
mircea_popescu: only in a very distant sort of manner. not in the traditional sense the term is used.
nubbins`: otherwise you're paying to ship a piece of glass across the continent :D
mircea_popescu: half the value of b-a is taking the entire layer of would-be ceos out of business completely, as there's nothing really they can usefully contribute.
nubbins`: TheNewDeal yeah. buy with a friend to save on shipping ;D
mircea_popescu: Kamuela: briefly, a bitcoin work market a la odesk. development team ready << well, the thing is this : we;ve been wanting something like this built for about a year. finding someone to do it is hard, however, and moreover i won't support a would be ceo on op's work. i'd rather deal with the coder guy directly.
nubbins`: TheNewDeal: totally. probably somewhere in the $20-ish range as a guess
TheNewDeal: if I give you a zip code can you figure out shipping costs?
nubbins`: he bought 50, he gets a sneak peek ;)
TheNewDeal: he got a sneak peak?
TheNewDeal: nubbins` can you pm me a digital version/
nubbins`: it's gonna be a beaut
Kamuela: so if i found a way to make them shine i'd probably get farther along
nubbins`: TomServo: i'm printing them this week, i do have a digital proof but i'd rather show off pictures of the actual silkscreened version. pics to follow, but you're buying blind if you pre-order ;)
TomServo: nubbins`: Is there a photo or sample of the poster?
Duffer1: b-a are generally firm believers in the Eddy Murphie method of help
Kamuela: i don't mind the real questions, kakobrekla addressed a serious point of "who are you?" that's a real question that has to be answered
Kamuela: there's a real potential to help me out in one way or another, but isn't it boring to make words and contribute nothing?
punkman: there's a few dozens of them
Kamuela: and how are they going to address a cheaper and lower-hassle competitor even with Bitcoin? will they openly say jobs paid in bitcoin are discounted? i don't think they could do that
Kamuela: meaning there's a whole lot of inertia to fight to make that happen
Kamuela: and odesk "just accepting Bitcoin" is a bigger deal with any real thought
Kamuela: especially when you factor in the fact that a bunch of the initial contractors are going to underprice in an attempt to gain customers, there's a real value proposition to a competing network
Kamuela: but after that there's a real competitive advantage to 10% and a couple days turn around time and <10% and 1 hour turnaround
Kamuela: the first couple thousand users on a Bitcoin-powered odesk are going to be BTC enthusiasts and folks looking to play around, meaning a release valve for pent-up demand for use of coins, and of course a dedicated following of people who want to try to make supplemental or full-time income doing btc freelance work
punkman: don't even need a website
TomServo: First comment: Did you have to fight the urge to call it a "pretty good post"?
TomServo: Pff. Schneier says "Matthew Green has a good post on what's wrong with PGP and what should be done about it." (with link of course)
Kamuela: of course that's a bit of laziness on the part of vetting your customer, but i understand that what i call laziness other people call serving needs, which I completely respect the need to do
Kamuela: for example, it seems so far from my interviews that something people really like is the guaranteed payment... something that this project would NOT be offering for at least a while. it certainly would not be part of the MVP
Kamuela: certainly as a competitor to existing odesk businesses, the project will shape itself around the interests of its customers. but what initially or conceptually is wrong with the odesk style?
pete_dushenski: Kamuela: it must be that every member of ethereum has a long history of proven success right? << it must be nothing of the sort and is in fact quite that
assbot: A Guide To Buying 5000 Ether/Bitcoin, 2.5x More Than Ethereum's Genesis Sale Offers | Contravex: A blog by Pete Dushenski
pete_dushenski: Kamuela: http://contravex.com/2014/07/23/a-guide-to-buying-5000-ether-bitcoin-2-5x-more-than-ethereums-genesis-sale/
Kamuela: yeah maybe it's a bad thing to mention, i don't want to be lumped into that "ether"
Kamuela: it must be that every member of ethereum has a long history of proven success right?
Kamuela: and a better question would be: why would I be crowdfunding if i didn't see marginal success somewhere else? it's usually cheaper to get funding within your own circle
pete_dushenski: Kamuela: why am i the one? because i'm committed to keeping it useful for people as far as it can be taken. i'm not looking to grow and sell out. my interests are aligned with keeping it one of the most decentralized ways to act in the BTC economy << "committed" is in no way a skill as it's here presented any more than a grade school student is committed to not getting an F.
thestringpuller: pete_dushenski: there is a saying: Loyalty to the End do you know what it means?
pete_dushenski: mircea_popescu: decimation so taleb's mistake is that he's being a BANAL asshole ? << he does get a lot of the "o this is nothing new" retort
