Їхав козак на війноньку,
прощав свою дівчиноньку:
"Прощай, рідненька, чорнобривенька,
я йду в чужую сторононьку.

Дайми, дівчино, хустину,
може, я в полі загину.
Накриють очі темної ночі,
легше в могилі спочину".

Дала дівчина хустину,
козак у бою загинув.
Накрили очі темної ночі,
легше в могилі спочинув.

А злії люди насилу
взяли нещасну дівчину.
Там серед поля гнеться тополя
та й на козацьку могилу.

mounting his horse in the morning,
cossac bid farewell to his girl'ling,
'off to enemy land', he said, holding her hand,
'who knows if i shall be returning.'

'out in the field I may perish,
 so give me your cloak, girl, to cherish,
 to carry and hold,
 and for warmth in grave's cold,
 for easier to sleep, when I'm buried.'

girl gave him her cloak to cherish,
and there in the battle he perished.
and easier did sleep, in grave's cold and deep,
wrapped in the cloth that he carried.

the foes, the next morning, took the poor girl'ling
out to the field, where the brave man was killed,
and among them, a knave
laid her out on the grave.
